Heat Sheild inquiries

I am looking for a heat shield for the turbo. If I get a sheet of aluminum and bend it around etc. etc. I still have to wrap my brake lines, hoses, etc. Right.
Or will it be sufficent.

Or I found this on ebay.

Has anyone used this?? If this works good. I'll just wrap the down pipe too. What do yall think?

I like to let the heat-producing stuff vent its heat and shield the more sensitive bits from said heat. I vote build a shield.

If blankets werent so spensive, I'd rock one.

I've got a blanket and it works well. No problems with anything in the engine bay melting. I still want a shield though to cover the top of the exhaust manifold between the head and the turbo inlet flange.

I figured I would spend just as much, geting sheet metal and buying wrap for the different hoses. I have saved alot by waiting for deals. Thank god.

If I did build a heat shield. What all hoses do I have to wrap. And on a second note. Does the 1.6 have to have a coolant reroute. I was thinking it already flowed out the back of it??????

I did a search but the infor was cloudy. Thanks

Thanks.

Brain, Thanks for the PM for tunning.

I have the Begi heat shield between the turbo/downpipe and the rest of the engine bay stuff, and I still slightly melted the lever on my brake proportioning valve.

In addition to the heatshield I would definitely wrap either the hotside and downpipe or all the stuff behind there, like the heater hoses and brake lines. Having to cut an inch off the heater hose on the side of the road to make it home is no damn fun.

Your engine bay looks good. I guess that settles it. I'm going to buy the blanket and mabe make a heat shield too. I have a few spare licensce plates around to create a template.

I run the "form fitting" turbo blanket from alamo. no heat problems.

Coolant flow on the 1.6 is the same as on the 1.8. Water from the pump outlet goes into the block at the front, exits out the back of the head, goes through the heater core, and then right back into the pump inlet. The thermostat is at the front, and when open, bypasses some of the water from the pump outlet straight out the front of the block, through the radiator, then back into the pump inlet at the same point as the water coming from the heater core.

FWIW, this is all I've run for over a year (time length doesn't say much)....

Jet hot the ex hausing, then blanket it, then put a shield over it...no worries evah!

m2cupcar 07-02-2008 09:31 AM

one day I'll have a blanket/sock for the turbine housing... meanwhile I'm using some free 20ga sheet metal from my old hvac unit. Works well - melting anything.

I didn't realize there were so many different types of shields. Thanks for the pics.
You all have some very nice engine bays. I'm going to have to paint my IC tubes now. LOL
