help me plz, i have stock transmission of 1.6 miata na 88 hp 1996 year, are this transmission is compatible with 1.8 miata engine? and what max power i can get with this transmission ?

Yes your 1.6L transmission will fit on a 1.8L motor.

They can handle anywhere from 250-300rwhp so long as you don't abuse them.

There is nothing wrong with the 5spd transmission. It is not "weak" by any stretch of the imagination. It has limits, just like any part/system does. There are guys who've broken the 5spd on stock power, just as there are guys who have over 300whp on the 5spd for many thousands of miles without an issue.

I don't think anybody shooting for 200whp (DOUBLE STOCK HORSEPOWER) would consider a 6spd swap a wise or money-smart investment because the 5spds handle that kind of power like a champ.

If you are aware of the limits of a part, and respect those limits, then it will probably last a long time. Saying "5spds are weak don't count on it lasting long" doesn't help a noob learn anything, especially an ESL noob. Next time, quantify your statement or refrain from giving advice.

I'll second Sam.

There is nothing wrong with the 5 speed gearbox. The 1.8 engine does not produce anywhere near enough torque to damage it in stock form, and plenty of folks (myself included) have been running 200+ HP turbocharged engines into them with no problem. And any engine shipped in any MX5 from 1989 through 2005 is compatible with any transmission from same.

The one traditional weak point in the 1.6l drivetrain (in the US-spec cars, at least) was the ring & pinion gear used in the differential from 1989 through 1993. The gears tend to break when subjected to moderate increases in torque (eg, even a small, low-boost turbocharger will usually break them.)

But with a non-turbocharged 1.8l engine I would not worry at all. The power difference between this and the original 1.6l engine is quite small, and nothing in the drivetrain will be damaged by it.

Well sorry that I was also mislead to my information, if it is not a weak point then why put a number on it and "Be careful with it".

I'm going to go against the grain here. if you plan on tracking the car or otherwise doing any sort of activity like that, it is absolutely a good idea to have a 6 speed. I'm probably right under 200 whp and I'm running a 6 speed because I don't want to break 5 speeds. with that said, I'm pretty sure thesnowboarder broke his 6 speed at 200 whp.

sure people run huge power through 5 speeds but that doesn't change the fact they are weaker and more prone to breaking. you have not told us what you're doing with the car, or your power level (unless you meant 88 HP?), but if you don't plan on tracking it I'm not sure if I'd bother with the 6 speed. if you're n/a then definitely not.
