Help Faeflora Pick a new Turbo

Goals: 550hp with 50/50 WI

I want something pretty cheap. I "lost my faith" when my GT30 bearings started to die this week when I touched 23psi. That means no spiffy new EFR or GT-X turbo.

Currently thinking about:

HY35 or HX35 (hx40 looks kinda big) $200-$350
GT3582 . proven power but not cheap. (found a pretty good looking one for $900 with a .62 AR turbine)
PT5857 $700ish
Borg Warner ????? something cheap, need to figure out the model numbers

Opinions?

Braineack 02-20-2011 12:16 PM

do you ever stop?

JayL 02-20-2011 12:31 PM

Have you thought about a PTE 5557R Billet turbo? I think one of these would be perfect for your goals.

fooger03 02-20-2011 12:48 PM

oooohhh, shiny!!!

Sean 02-20-2011 04:31 PM

HC1 or HX40 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18psi 02-20-2011 04:31 PM

Holset or BorgWarner IMO

This. 18psi and I actually agree on something, for once.

Like I said in your other thread, look into the turbine housing sizes. There are plenty of options for you in the Holset range. *Do not judge by physical size*

Borg Warner turbos are also top notch. Extended Tip Technology is bad ass and they making VERY nice numbers and the spool is great. Most of the medium frame S series turbos are under a grand, which is not bad at all.

jtothawhat 02-20-2011 05:37 PM

PTE Billet 5857 of course!

Get more money?

18psi 02-20-2011 05:52 PM

LOL as much as I like chinachargers I would DEFINITELY not recommend using one to get to 550.
I'm with sav on this:
if you want big boy power like that, there is just no cheap way of achieving it. Gotta pay to play. Or should I say: " gotta pay to have a long e-peen on the internetz"

Of all people here, you probably spent if not the most, then close to the most money on your build so far fixing all the bullshit and mistakes.

leatherface24 02-20-2011 06:21 PM

Borg Warner

Faeflora 02-20-2011 06:36 PM

Which borg warner models do you recommend?

For an HX40 I assume I'd want the smallest turbine AR available?

Also, note that other than my frame rail modification, there were no major mistakes in my build other than the multitude of fuck ups by the shop I paid for some work. I would have done that stuff myself, and perhaps fucked it up myself for free, but I didn't have a place to work on my car at the time.

18psi 02-20-2011 06:54 PM

It doesn't really matter how or why. Fact is, you spent lots of money. More than most here. Itd be a shame to cheap out now and take chances with so much invested time and money.

That's all.

Good luck either way.

yunvmyegt 02-20-2011 09:11 PM

get an hy35, i paid like 150 shipped for one with 60k on it off cumminsforums.com.... also if you ever think you want bigger, just go to the hx, theres way more options like turbine housing size, and the ability to go to an hx40 hybrid.... and you can get a pile of holsets for the cost of a legit garrett...

I just registered on cumminsforums :)

I'm having difficulty finding a list of all the turbine housings that are available for a HX/Y35 or 40. Do you know of any sites that have a list of all the options in one spot?

nixapgt 02-20-2011 09:23 PM

For holsets, I'd look into he351cw. Hy35 exhaust housing with and hx40 sized compressor wheel. I have a hy and I love it, but don't know how efficient it would be at that power level.

yunvmyegt 02-20-2011 09:29 PM

im looking for the other info i posted, but heres a bit about holsets in general... someone from here posted on our forum, and this is what i had saved around and posted for him. ill find the housing list in a minute...

http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50503

actually the turbine hosuing sizes are there too... i must have forgot i posted that stuff...

I read about that hybrid 35/40 and it sounds pretty damn sweet.

Can you please tell me some info about your current hy35 setup? What car are you running it on, how much boost, how much power?

Some good links for holster info.

kaisersoze 02-21-2011 02:37 AM

Well given your luck I would definitely get a journal bearing turbo so the CHRA is rebuildable.
I say Borg Warner, an S262 or S362 I think(their naming conventions cornfuse me) are the GT35 equivalents and are generally a little under 1K. Better deal than a used GT35.
You might be able to find a used FP red for relatively cheap but I don't know about the flange.

pusha 02-21-2011 03:34 AM

As the bro above me said, have you thought at all about FP's turbos? I can personally vouch for the toughness and balls a FP Red has.

18psi 02-21-2011 10:19 AM

Weren't they discontinued?
Don't they only come in subaru/evo specific bolt patterns only?
Just wondering.

fmowry 02-22-2011 07:32 AM

I'd figure out what was fucked up with the install or tune on the GT30 before I spent money on another turbo. Bearings don't just die.

Faeflora 02-22-2011 10:15 AM

ATP thought that the turbo could have been starved of oil.

Blouch disagreed. :|

Current plan of action is to remove the restrictor and put it back on the car and see how happy it is. Also to remove the one little burr on my compressor blade.

That's the canned response from every turbo company EVER to avoid replacing something under warranty. They know they have you by the nuggets. Unfortunately how are you going to prove them wrong?

Faeflora 04-08-2011 07:22 PM

Final result was my turbo was just fine. I just was unfamiliar with what 20psi sounded like on a ball bearing turbo. Or any turbo.

So here we go I am going to upgrade my shit because I am not spinning my tires in 5th gear. I cannot live without 600hp. I figured that I would threadsurrect since well, this thread is appropriate for the discussion.

This is the turbo I am looking at:

Borg Warner 177283
63mm inducer
68mm turbine
.88 A/R T4 turbine housing
$635 dollars motherfuckers from some farm supply shop lol

I figure that I will slap that bitch on and see how it does. I am guessing it will spool up and hit 20psi by 5000RPM. My guess is that I will not like that so much but who knows, maybe it will make more power under the curve than my GT3071 because of the massive flow capabilities. IF I am dissatisfied, I will pick up the .91 housing for a whopping $125 LOL and get a quick spool valve.

I think that for a total price of $1100 or so I can have super awesomeness.

BTW I ended up deciding on the 63mm wheel because that's comfortably in the midrange of the turbo. I think with a 66mm, it would spool too slowly, and at this point in time I don't have plans for more than 600hp. Hope I don't regret those words, but honestly, I think my mazda standard miata bearings will die at some point.

1slowna 04-08-2011 07:59 PM

not a terrible choice and certainly a great deal. i am just getting into reading about your build and i must say i do like the route you are taking, had i stumbled upon this soner i would have suggested a billet wheel journal bearing 6262 precision, the billet wheel turbos with a journal bearing spool faster then the older ball bearing cast wheel gt35rs. My good friend has a k20 powered 2000 civic si and he just swapped a gt35r for a new 6765 and the difference is absolutely incredible, those hondas do have a lil something to aid in spool times though lol. VTEC= full boost.

gearhead_318 04-10-2011 02:31 AM

Will the rest of your drivetrain take 550hp? How the hell will you get traction?

6 speed needs to be fixed/replaced as it is. Diff will probably explode. Traction is on the car in the form of mickey thompsons and they work.

OK last chance for critique on my turbo choice before I buy it tomorrow.

This is the 63mm turbo I am looking at. 177283:

The compressor outlet is 3" :)

Genuinely think you have something wrong with you where you can't just enjoy your car for what it is, and that you enjoy working on it and planning other things than being happy with what you have.

Of course I mean that in a non dick head way.

Never the less, it's entertaining to watch!

It's called Leatherface Syndrome. Awesome disease, but expensive.

jtothawhat 04-13-2011 10:45 PM

I guess I have this same disease.

Faeflora 04-14-2011 09:53 AM

Damnit not sure if I should get the 66mm or not.

18psi 04-14-2011 10:57 AM

stop pussyfooting around and go straight for the 100mil

curly 04-14-2011 11:00 AM

I vote 101mm

I think it would spool a bit too slow FF. Just get the 63mm and at worst you'll have to boost it more.

I hereby claim the title of biggest turbo ever to be put on a miata engine.
