Help me figure out whats on this car

Picked up a 91 turbo this weekend with a hardtop.

When I first looked under the hood I saw what I thought was aids.

AFPR?

It ran like shit and I was a little worried. Said fuck it and bought it anyways.

Took it apart when I got home and...

Megasquirt!

Did some more digging and found EBC (disconnected) and a missing boost source nipple. So the wastegate was completely disconnected...

Overall with some love I should make my money back and get to keep this:

We don't always suggest getting your boost source from the compressor, was it hooked up anywhere else? I doubting it, but nice find regardless.

Is this not a few rust fixes away from being a nicer car than yours however? Why aren't you keeping it?

And what engine/manifold is on the blue one? Got any full engine bay pics?

It wasn't hooked up anywhere, wastegate was never being actuated lol.

If I hadn't put the work into mine I would consider it. But I paid a lot less for mine and I'm just going to put some love into this one and try and make a buck. It drives like junk and a tune will go a long way into making it sellable.
Plus the paint isn't amazing, and if I'm going to put all my stuff into a car I want a perfect body. Mine is at the point where I just need paint.

Whats your take on the Fuel stuff? Used to be on bandaids then got Megasquirted? The guy I bought it from had no idea what was going on.

Pretty sure its an ebay manifold, pretty janky setup but with some love should be ok. Exhaust leaks galore though.

That's a fuel pressure regulator. If an injector is 400cc at stock psi (43.5psi, or 60psi for an NB), you can increase it's capacity to 500cc or whatever by increasing base fuel pressure. Usually you only see one piece, the one on the firewall, with just a flange and a hose barb on the fuel rail. I'd suggest returning it to the stock FPR, selling that separately, and most likely you'll need larger injectors.

My guess is he's on stock injectors running at super high fuel pressure to have even half way decent AFRs.

Green top injectors make me think that they are supra injectors. Plugged in my computer and holy shit it was running lean. Some autotune has helped. I need to check base timing and try to fix at least some of the exhaust leaks. Also the bov was connected to a boost source instead of vacuum...

Timing is about 8 degrees retarded. Looks like somebody added a megasquirt but didn't tune it at all. Curly got a spare fpr?

That symbol on the coilover adjuster knob looks familiar but I don't know what it is. What kind of coils are on it?

I like that car.

Megan Racing, not sure of the brand.

I'll give you a great deal on it :)

Yeah, those are 305s, so at stock fuel pressure, they'll be good for about 155 crank hp according to RC's injector calculator. Use the FPR to crank it up to 60psi, and they're good for 185. Big difference with only 16.5psi of fuel. I think the stock fuel pump will run out of steam around 100psi, so at a 'safe' 90psi, the injectors are worth around 225 crank hp.

I do not, however I think Ryan has a rusty NA1.8 that should bolt in.

Throw in DIY's base map for timing, see what happens:

Sounds like a lot of little jobs like a decent solder and other such cleaning and you'd have a a good car to sell. Take shit off like the FPR, megans, MS, injectors, turbo, etc etc, source some stock shit, and you'd make a great profit.

aidandj 01-19-2015 07:52 PM

I've been thinking a lot about that. I'm either going to clean it up and try and sell it as a turbo car, or return to stock. I have stock exhaust parts from my build but I think that selling it as a well running turbo car will get me the best money to labor ratio.
