Help! Short block issue
 

I have a 1995 M that has end play problems. If I have to put in a new/rebuilt short block can I use a newer engine short block? I have a turbo that was custom built for the car and also have a stand alone ECU. This engine was just overhauled and then it started dying everytime the clutch was put in. I have to pull the engine but have been told good chance it could be gone. Can I use a newer short block and use all my other parts from the 95 engine? I have seen where some people recomend the 2000 and newer engines and if the short block would work with my other parts I would consider going that rout. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Yes you can use newer short blocks. I believe all the NB blocks are compatible; EXCEPT: Later model('99 and newer) piston tops are shaped differently, will jack your compression too high and will probably hit your '95 head. You should swap out the pistons.

Thanks for responding. So I can use a 2000 or newer but would have to change the pistons, is that correct? I have heard a lot of bad about the 99 engines. Since I am not using the 95 ECU would it be better to go long block on the newer engines and just use the other parts from my 95 engine?

Long block would be better and a lot less work.

I have a chance to buy a 2002 or 2004 long block will I have any problems with installing in my 95? Also will all my other parts from my 95 work such as manifold and turbo setup?

Keep in mind that the 95 uses a CPS on the back of the exhaust cam. The round thingy goin into the cam cover. The newer 99+ motors use a crank sensor on the front of the motor right by the crank along with a CAM sensor on the front of the cam cover too.

What makes you think you need a new motor besides the guy with dollar signs in his eyes that told you so? If the car runs fine but dies when comming from speed and depressing the clutch, you need to look at the Idle control system or the tune. If the car has been tuned for warmer weather, different fuel, or the condition of the motor before the rebuild it will need to be updated to accommodate.

Have a compression and or leak down test done on the motor you have now. Check to see if the IAC is operating properly. What kind of engine managment do you have?

What is an end play problem? Not getting any?
