hey guys is my crank pulley normal?

After reinstalling my oilpump with new seal and crank seal etc. And i notice that the pulley seems to not line up with the tdc mark on my timming plate. Is this normal? I have pics please someone check this out and tell me if i need a new one.

Pics are too fuzzy for my old eyes, but are you sure that cylinder #1 is at TDC?

yess the crank itself lines up. at 12 oclock but the mark on my pulley is about 15 or so degrees down from the 0 mark on the tab. And cams still line up as they should in this position.

I had something like that when the harmonic balancer started giving out, and the pulley wouldn't line up. The two parts of the pulley had started to break apart and rotate with respect to each other, but seemed solid as a rock when removed. I ended up getting another one, and all is well.

Great now all i need is a new pulley anybody got a source?

Get a new one from the dealer. Try Marshall at Trussville.
I had to replace mine a few years ago. Same thing happened. My marks were way out of whack and that was the only way to fix the problem. Don't take any chances on a used one, or you might end up with the same problem. Also, next time post pictures that we can enlarge to actually see what's going on in the pictures..... :bigtu:

I don't know how the miata pulley is made but on the jeep it's an outer ring pressed on an inner ring with a rubber damper in the middle, as it ages that rubber goes to shit and it starts to walk. Mine walked backwards and started to eat into the timing cover.

I've read stories on .net of pulleys doing as you describe, my old car the timing light would jump quite a bit between pulses and that was one of the suggester problems.

I really don't think there is a problem to be honest. A timing light works by triggering the light whenever the first cylinder is fired. One way to find out is to put the belt on, fire it up and shoot it with a timing light. If it is ok, it will show roughly 10 degrees or whatever you had it set to. I would go out and check for sure for you, but my engine is on a stand waiting for a replacement crank.
