Hood mtg stud broke. Ideas?
 

So I am slowly assembling my car after paint. I am a lazy FUCK and even tho there was a tap and die set within 10 feed of where I was standing, I decided not to clean the threads on my hood before bolting it on.

Consequence? One of the welds for the stud broke. It is just spinning now along with the nut.

What should I do? I was thinking about drilling a 1" diameter hole above it so that I could access the back and hopefully grab hold of this thing well enough to take it apart...Then just put a bolt behind it hopefully for the future.

You are screwed. Time to cut off the hinges and go with hood pins on all four corners. No, but seriously, I would use a holesaw like you said. But I doubt you will be able to grab it with anything from the backside. So your best bet may be to cut the nut off with a sawzall or cut off wheel, then put a bolt and nut back through it.

buuut my fresh paint!!! lol.

I wont have time to work on it for another week or 2. Ill cut the hole and see what I got.

Put a short self tapping screw through it. :brain:

haha its actually tight believe it or not. I just cant get my hood off and I would rather deal with it now then when I need to yank the motor or something.

Take a dremmel and chisel/hammer. Cut a notch in the nut and spit it with the chisel. Stick some tape near your cutting area to protect the paint.

What good would that do? The nut and stud already spin. The spot weld holding the stub inside the hood broke. I have another suggestion, drill and tap the stud, then get an appropriate sized allen set screw. While holding the nut with a wrench tighten the set screw. Now if my brain is working correctly right now (which I may be thinking wrong) you should be able to:

1) hold the stud with an allen wrench and then back the nut off, which still leaves you with the broken stud problem. (Maybe once you get it off it can be tacked back in place)

2) and this is where I dont know if my brain is working correctly, you should be able to hold the stud with the allen wrench and actually tighten the nut against the hinge. Therefor solving the problem, and if you need to take the hood off, use step one.

Just what I would try.

Drill the center of the stud out a bit, insert a easy out to hold the stud (square easy out like craftsmen work better for my than the reverse screw things from shittyzone), wrench off the nut, JBweld/Epoxy the stud stiff again (just jam it all in there like an inmate), clean threads and nut, presto happy and no paint is jacked up for rusties later.

I literally just said that...

The nut would now be laying on the ground, facilitating easy removal of the stud. This would all take much less time and effort than drilling and tapping a stud just to remove a nut...

Yes Ryan it is. Wasn't trying to dis you. More of a slightly different approach. Just had better luck getting a good bite on an easy out than an allen wrench. Plus don't like possibly sacrificing an allen tool jamming it into a stud, however I do have some cheap crappy random tools in a box just for the occasion.

At least I have options. Ill try something when I have time. Im more worried about a solution for re-mounting rather than for removing it. I doubt JB weld will hold because I ahve no way of getting behind it.

Did you mean notch it and then split it? Your post said spit, I assumed you meant spin.
