How can I tell if my COP setup is bad?
As the title says: can anyone tell me how can I tell if I have a problem with my COPS?
I'm facing constant fueling issues. I already changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, sparkplugs and took out my injectors and cleaned them. I then checked all the fuel lines. Now, I'm getting misfires which makes me think I may have an ignition related issue. Anyway I can tell? Thanks |
What are you running for an ECU? MS? As for the ignition, what did the plugs look like when you removed them? Did they have excessive carbon buildup? Did it run better immediately following the new plugs? What kind of plugs are you running and what heat range? What gap on the plugs?
Did you get the fueling issue worked out? What was the problem? Sorry for all the questions, but we need more info to diagnose this. |
Same reason I tossed mine. I suspected i had an issue with the harness i built. It worked fine for at least 10 months then I started getting miss fires and ecu resets. Ditched cops for the stock setup again and the car feels great. Im selling all 8 of the toyota cops I had and burning the harness. Mazda knows best.

About working out the fueling issue: when I originally changed the sparkplugs and the fuel filter, the car ran fine for about 1 week but I was still getting the smell of fuel fumes. That never went away. I changed the fuel pump this morning (I had a Walbro 190hp and went to a 255hp) to see and that of course only made it worse. I plan on taking the sparkplugs out tomorrow morning and checking them. The old ones I took out before had some carbon build up but nothing extraordinary. I also bought an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator. I plan on buying the gauge tomorrow and installing it to check the fuel pressure. I need to find out how can I check whether the COPs are working properly. BTW, thanks Pat. |

So changing the plugs did in fact get it running better for a week. (despite the fuel smell?) Try running a set of 6's and gap them to .020 inches. Running less gap will help to troubleshoot a weak ignition system. I run .020 inches all the time and never have any problems.
And now I will have to say that possibly, your fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is leaking.Though I think you said you've already changed it. Anyways, definitely do a fuel pressure check. Also, try cranking it up and removing the vacuum line that goes to the FPR. See if there's any traces of gasoline in the vacuum line. It could possibly be leaking fuel past the regulator, into the vac hose, and into the intake manifold. And if you decide to sell one of those fuel pumps, let me know. Though I would imagine shipping would be higher than normal. And it's never a problem Rafa. Glad to help. BTW, if both fuel pumps are ok, I'll give you the 190hp one for shipping only. Let me know if you're interested but indeed, remember shipping it will be more expensive. |

You can check the cops by swapping them in a variety of OBDII toyota products and seeing that car throws a code. That's how I test the cops I sold to urbansoot. I put them in wife's RX300 and drove around on them for 150 miles and they ran the car perfect, no codes. And it threw a code on an original one when I reinstalled it. You're looking for a celica, corolla, previa, camry, highlander, rx300...

I should have posted it. Sorry. I finally found out what was the issue. A wire on my MAP sensor would come loose and the car would begin getting flooded and it would just bog down and stop. We fixed that and we're in the process of installing an Automotive fuel pressure regulator along with a new 255hp fuel pump. I tested the car for a few minutes and everything is back to working properly. Thanks to all for your assistance. On to the dragstrip! Tomorrow night is the first drag racing night and I'm going to go see what the car can do. Many thanks. |

I shoulda put those toasted coils I had in my dads car(rx330), and had him go to the dealer for warranty replacement. |

I know they're a five second swap on the front cylinder bank of an rx300, so just walk around parking lots until find an unlocked door. :D
