How do i tell if its a 1.6L or a 1.8L?
 
Im looking to buy a miata and i dont know how to tell the difference between the engines. I really want the 1.6L because i have a rebuilt motor with a garrett turbo off a mercury capri XR2 (same motor as the 323 GTX) that i want to swap in.

I'm betting that if it has the capri turbo it has the capri manifold which means it has the same size engine as the capri, aka the 1.6. All of that adds up to you looking at someone selling a GRM challenge car that ran the challenge for 3 years.

Open the hood and look directly from the front.

CAS to the right=1.8

CAS to the left=1.6


The hood is the thingy that covers the engine.

put your nose to the exhaust with the car on and take a good smell. If it smells like peaches and cream its 1.8, if strawberries and banana its 1.6. It takes a while til you start to smell it, so keep doing it for at least a few hours.

IF YOU HAVE A FUCKING 1.6L IN YOUR GARAGE THEN FUCKING TAKING A FUCKING PICTURE OF YOUR 1.6L AND THEN COMPARE.

There is no doubt in my mind if you can't figure out the difference of two engines that really don't look similar at all (google images would have been a good way to start), then I know for sure you won't be able to swap in that 1.6. Ah, I assumed if it was rebuilt it would have at least ebay forged rods, not slightly-stronger-than-our-limp-dick miata rods.

What turbo did the xr2 come with anyway? Actually I don't care because it is 20 years old and therefore ancient. OP get a T25 from zilvia or a T3 churbo for $125 and ditch the shitty capri parts.

Gotta ensure you wire them in parallel though, it negates the boost if u wire it in series.
