I tried using a press, but they just mash in and I cant push them out. It is also hard to keep the houseing from moveing.. How the hell did you guys do it?

air chisel. why are you trying to get them out, diff swap?

soild mounts

drill out the old ones -- swiss cheese style. there's metal sleeves around the outside that need to release from the carrier wings. you may need to tap those loose with a chisel or something.

I did mine with a 1/2" dia x 1 ft hunk of brass and a BFH. I just worked on the outer metal ring that is pressed in the housing. Just started going around it, driving on the outer ring and as soon as it started moving, it came out a few whacks later. I used brass to save marring the housing. The outer metal ring did fold over to the inside, but that did make it easier to hold the punch on the ring. Don't worry, it WILL come out. Did the whole thing on the floor with the diff arms cribbed up on wood blocks. Didn't drill anything or heat anything. Leave the center alone. Taking it out really doesn't do anything because of all of the rubber. The outer ring is key.

Hole saw on an electric drill. Cut the center out, and they'll push through.

take a wood chisel. proceed to separate the two halves of metal around the rubber.
seen here: http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...n/CIMG1347.JPG you can see a full mount pooped out and the metal halves are bent away to relief the pressure....once they fail, they just hammer out.. or may want to drill holes into the rubber to make it easier, but i did both mine within 5 minutes. The first side i did you can see i drilled out the center section (sitting rightmost edge of picture), simply doing the chisel on the second was faster and easier. Like Stein says, outer ring is key. |
Heated up the alum and smacked the bushing with a bfh, also I had the diff arm supported with an equal diameter piece of pipe under the bushing so I didn't bust the housing.
