How hard is it to replace AC compressor and condensor?

MY AC blows hot but the coolant level is fine. I figured since I am replacing the radiator, I would also replace the compressor and condensor that are both 20 years old, then I will have it charged by my mechanic.

Anyone have experience replacing these items?

Why do you think the coolant level and A/C are related?

reddington 10-26-2010 05:08 PM

Sorry I was refering to the AC coolant. The R-12 or R134A

The word you are looking for is "refrigerant".

Neither of those items are terribly hard to replace. You going to get the system evacuated, or are you going to just crack it open and recharge after? R-12 is some nasty stuff to put into the atmosphere.

easy breezy

Have a professional shop pressure test your system. If it is low pressure, have him evacuate your system. Then get the system retrofitted and refill with R134a. If pressure in your system is normal, check the wiring going to the AC Compressor. If you can determine that the wiring is not faulty, have the professional evacuate your AC system, then replace your compressor.

I wouldn't worry about the heat exchanger.

Thanks. I read that since the exchanger is a low point in the system, all of the junk/crud/crap accumulates in it. For $100, I think it makes good sense to change out the exchanger. I currently have R 134A in there now.

I figure when I am changing my radiator, I can change all of these other parts too given the room that I will have underhood.
