That all dependes on who I'm taking and if I get blown or not.

kung fu jesus 02-24-2007 11:24 PM

why rebuild when spare engines are cheap and plentiful?

Arkmage 02-24-2007 11:25 PM

$400 for a low milage used engine :)

getsidewaysd1 02-24-2007 11:44 PM

Show me a low milage 1.8 in my area for $400 and I'll give you $100

Damn, now that was a good set up and delivery.

99 Long blocks at Planet Miata for $1250. 94-97 for $750.

Because you can increase displacement, use stronger internals, and balance what rotates. Look at how much power markp and AndyFloyd get to play with. I'd take 8k rpm redline and 300-350 whp without risking destroying my engine any day.

kung fu jesus 02-25-2007 12:46 AM

yes, on the flip side, you also get to upgrade the transmission, diff, and brakes (whether you want to or not).

getsidewaysd1 02-25-2007 02:30 AM

Your both so right. But think of how fun it must be.

overnighted from japan? More than you can afford pal.

miatanutz 02-25-2007 10:44 AM

A reasonable quality rebuild usually runs $2500 or so...and then you will have to do some of the work yourself. It is true, the real answer to this question is that it CAN cost any amount...depending on what youre doing to the engine.

I agree with KFJ....I wouldnt screw with rebuilds when I can get a nice used engine cheaply.

kung fu jesus 02-25-2007 01:23 PM

i think crx (jason) got his '99 1.8 for $500. if you look around locally, you can find them. i'm not that impressed with planet miata's stuff nor their prices.

with anything, you can find what you want at a very good price if you have the patience and knowledge.

it's not uncommon to get a 1.8 for a few hundred $$. wasn't olderguy asking like $400 or $500 for his complete 1.8 motor and tranny?
