How much will this engine take?

Found a used engine that I am seriously looking to purchase. Here's the specs as far as the guy selling it knows:
Has just over 10000 miles on it
Was built by FM and cost just over $5000 when it was bought
WisecoPistons, forged; 9.0:1CR
1mm overbore
Carrillo Rods, Set/4 (A beam)
ARP head studs
ARP main cap studs
ASF engine prep work, custom
ASF multi-angle valve job and prep/assembly
ASF unshroud valves
ASF backcut stock intak valves
Powdercoated valve cover black

That's all the guy knows about it. Would this engine hold together upwards of 350+ horsepower? If so, how much past? I can save quite a bit of money going this route so it's something I'm seriously considering.

that will take literally anything you plan on throwing at it.

with a good tune.

On a side note, I would verify with FM what is in the motor, etc... Don't take the guys word for it.

that engine can handle more power than the chassis or you...

miatamania 08-19-2008 01:23 AM

The short answer to your question is yes.

The longer answer is with that engine everything else in the potential drivetrain basically says screw off...I don't want to work that hard.

Somewhere north of 500whp.

fmowry 08-19-2008 08:35 AM

How long it can take it is the real question. It will handle any hp number you throw at it. Unfortunately people equate "built" motors with longevity. That's just not the case.

I know plenty of people with 60k+ miles on built motors. How many years is that for you?

JayL 08-19-2008 10:36 AM

Well, with the setup in my signature on this engine I hope to break 400hp on race gas and sit comfortably at just over 325hp using pump gas for street use. My car is an 01 with less than 20000 miles on it, so I don't really rack up the miles, but I'm pretty hard on the car when I do.

mikef85 08-19-2008 12:42 PM

You should be able to get 400whp on pump gas. I did.

I just had it dropped off and I'm very happy. Got the engine, a 6 speed transmission and a trunk lid for $2000 delivered to my garage.

saint_foo 08-19-2008 02:06 PM

Wow, nice score!!!

I hope it all works out for you.

On Carillo A-Beams? Those are the weakest rods Carillo makes, so I would say the limit would be 500whp at the most.

Hell of a deal. Be sure to post when you dyno it!

It won't even be installed until this winter most likely. I just finished my my new turbo build and got the car back on the road this past week and I want to enjoy it for a bit before I mess with it more. There's a couple of things that I need to fix on this new engine before I can put it in. I'm also at a loss as to build the top end up a bit more to handle higher revs using the 99 head or swap my 01 head over and build it up that way. Until I figure everything out I will continue to lurk and learn like I have for the past year or so.

lordrigamus 08-21-2008 12:11 AM

Wish I had one!

NBdriftpilot 08-21-2008 09:32 PM

my question is how much can a stock motor handle with boost?, turbo or supercharger

lordrigamus 08-22-2008 09:51 PM

Mine took 15psi on a stock motor,no intercooler,factory timing with 100 octane.Way rich on fuel...for a short time.

Then it was off to that big engine stand in the sky!!!
