How to Retro Ford style LED fog lights on an 1999-2000 Miata with factory fogs.
 

This is my write up on it. This assumes that you already know how to remove the headlights and the fog light brackets. I posted it on Facebook because this site limits how many picture I can upload. I am willing to put it all here if the admins allow me to upload all the images.

Thank you. Even though I have been here since 2011, I am basically a newby here as I have only been lurking until recently.

This is simple pictorial explanation on how to retrofit modern LED Morimoto Ford foglights on a 1999-00 Mazda Miata that already has factory foglights.
As many who own these years know the foglights in most do not work and finding replacements are near next to impossible. This retrofit will allow easy replacement of an easy to find off the shelf foglight that is high quality and will never need to change the bulb again.What you need:

• 881 socket pig tails

• 4 #10 self tapping screws, 3/4” long
• 8 washers about 1/2 diameter
• Philips head screw driver
• Sharper marker
• 9/64 drill bit and drill
• 10mm wrench and 10mm socket. (a 10mm socket wrench will help too)
• Trimming tool such as a swivel deburring tool. Knife will work but not as safe to use.

First you will need to remove the headlights. (search the internet for how to if you don’t know how to do it) Next you will need to unplug the factory wiring from the fog lights. You get access to those through the fender well by removing the screws holding on the fender liner. You will then need to unbolt the fog light brackets. It has three 10mm bolts holding it. Two are accessible from the top of the bumper under where the headlights were. Those will need two wrenches or one wrench from at top with a second person using a ratchet from underneath. I do recommend you use a ratchet wrench from top if you have no help instead of the socket wrench. The other bolt is taken off from the fender well, it is holding the fog light support brace to the frame.

Now you will need replace the old Miata fog light socket with the new 881 socket. Make sure to get the colors matched. Black with black, Red with green. Regardless Black is always with black Just in case your factory harness does not have a green wire. Crimping the wires is best.

Next reinstall the fog light bracket with the new fog light installed. Once bolted in plug in and verify that it works. If it works the reinstall the headlight and fender liner and go. You may need to adjust the white aim screw on the back side of the fog light.

Nice write up! I've been debating doing a similar retrofit on my 2001, but on the other hand fog lights are damn near useless anyways.

These aren't. I had them on my 2003. They are almost as bright as HID.

On the 2001-03 you need to make the foglight opening 1/4" larger and make and adapter bracket. a 1/4" thick piece of plastic will work. In the pics these are the first version. I am using the new version which isn't ,much difference other than appearance.

I used the Subaru style Morimoto lights on my 2001. I didn't enlarge the foglight holes and made adapter brackets out of aluminum bar stock that I had lying around.

Eventually the plan is to wire the fog lights up as DRL's.

Those are the same ones. There must be a slight difference in hole sizes between the 01 and the 03. But the Sub and Ford are the same. Type S

Are they the same as the 70mm universals? (Not that it matters, same price)

Only the inside of the foglight is. The outer housing is different on the 70mm. It's aim adjustment is on the outside instead of the inside like the Type S used in the subarus and Fords. There are others that use the Type s also. Price is the same for all. The universals work better for cars that never had factory fog lights. The Type S works best for those that had factory 3" foglights.
