HP and Torque #'s

What's up. Trying to make sense of the #'s.
First let me tell ya a little bit about the build. 1.6 stock block. ARP head studs and cometic gasket. TD04L-13T (Ported turbine and comp. Inlets) Kraken 2.75" full exhaust. Flowforce 640's. D585 coils and Magnecor kv85 wires. Mspnp2. Bofi (Boost Products) intercooler and piping. Turbosmart kompact bov plumb back.

Just got it tuned. 265hp/234tq

What I'm trying to understand is how the hp is calculated by the Dyno. (Mustang Dyno btw)

From what I've read, you take your peak tq X rpm/5252 = hp. Given that, if you look at the dyno graph, I'm estimating peak tq
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bc128d874b.jpg
at about 5500 rpm x 234 = 1,287,000/5252 = 245 hp.
But the dyno says 265hp. How is that? Not a big deal, the car is frickin so fun. Just curious.

Take your torque at any RPM

divide by 5200

multiply by the same RPM

that is HP at that RPM

at 5200 RPM, the lines cross.

please post a legible photo of your sheet

Well done. Don’t bend the rods.

oreo 11-16-2019 10:41 PM

At your HP peak (about 6500rpm, but they should have rev'd it higher) you were making 215ft/lb

6500/5252*215=266HP

Nice clean installation, and you have a nice power band.

oops, I guess I type slow.

sorry bout that, poor lighting and very light ink on the sheet. Had to zoom in and play with cam filters.
...and thank you gentlemen. I had shared my results with Kraken on FB, which he shared to his page. A lot of comments about..."there's no way to get those numbers with a 13t", and "oh, it's the US, they always over inflate there numbers".
Either way I think it's funny, but I just wanted to know the reasoning and math behind it, and now you've cleared that up for me.👍

DAMN, it's still blurry. It's clear on my phone until I hit reply, then it downloads and pixelated. Oh well

x_25 11-17-2019 10:26 AM

Easy to read on my phone!

It looks like theh are using power at the engine, not the wheels, so you would be right about 230-235hp at the wheels, which is right about what I would expect for a well tuned and running TD04L-13T on a 1.6. Those graphs look great and I hope my comes out this well once I finish it! I have an unopened 1.6 with a MK1 TD04 Kraken setup.

Damn, great #'s and clean install!

Longnose92 11-17-2019 12:49 PM

X_25, see now I'm confused again. They measure output at the wheels not at the crank. So how do you figure??

DNMakinson 11-17-2019 02:33 PM

Base on some of the best TD04 builds, numbers seem possible.

Post tune and log, please. Maybe some pics of your porting.

What are claims by others with the Kraken? Also in play are the ambient air temp and the quality of your intercooler, which is an unknown to me.

I did not port the turbo. It is a rebuilt and ported OEM from Hill Country Forced Induction. I held it against the cheap $150 Amazon turbo that I foolishly purchased. Later realizing that I dumped so much $ into this build, and the turbo probably wasnt the best place to cut costs...DUH. The intercooler is from BOFI Racing. Seemed decent & plug and play.

Also Kraken mentioned someone recently in Europe got around 260 to the wheels from the 1.6 tdo4

Did EFI tune the car as well? Cool place, had a few friends with subaru's get their cars tuned & dynoed there.
Not going turbo just yet but would be awesome that a local place is familiar with our platforms and getting them running right.
Sure that thing is an absolute blast at that power level.
From what I've heard, their dyno reads a bit weird and on the lower side..
Would love to see this thing around at some events next season!

Yes EFI tuned it. They were recommended by a local tire shop. They (EFI) have (own and race) a bunch of Miatas and are proficient with Megasquirt. They did tell me that they're Dyno is the lowest reading around. The car is absolutely fantastic. Now I just gotta get the power to the road. I can't stomp 1st or 2nd gear with traction, and alot of times 3rd spins a bit too. I have 4.30 in the rear now, so I'm gonna screw with gearing and some wider tires def. 195 50 15 now. Thought that wheel would be good for the build. Honestly thought I'd only get 180-200 whp based on what I had researched. Worked out very well.

Yeah, a set of 225s will be your friend. You'll also likely want a 3.9 or even a 3.6 final drive. Are you still on the 1.6 diff?

Longnose92 12-17-2019 09:19 PM

No, I put in a 4.3 Torsen. I have that listed for sale now and was wanting a 3.6 and 6 spd eventually

Turbomack 12-17-2019 09:48 PM

Congrats. My son and I had a lot of fun with our first Miata project which was also a turbo 1.6. That is, or was, right up to the point that detonation killed it. We hadn’t focused enough on cooling mods plus didn’t have enough sensor and programmed protections built in. Consequence of the “just send it” approach. I also chuckled a little at your comment about not expecting that good of results as we also had a similar reaction when the dyno numbers came up. Have fun and know that you can break parts at that level!
