I hit a truck tire on the freeway

For those of you who didn't see my run in with a rock, here is the thread :

https://www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-chat-9/scary-run-rock-12525/

Now today on the way to my g/f's house a dump truck blew a tire, and the tread went right in front of me. I couldn't avoid it as I was stuck in the center lane. It clipped the bottom of the bumper and hit the starion intercooler hose then sent the intercooler into the radiator again.

What the fuck?! I JUST replaced the damn radiator for the SAME reason! The brackets I made held up fine, this time the intercooler brackets themselves bent. The radiator hose there is full of pinhole leaks from the tires steel belts. I fucking HATE this ghetto intercooler. I could replace it if this stupid shit would stop happening. Thankfully my tires weren't flattened and nothing else was damaged. I just got the car back on a tow truck for the 2nd time, so on to the pictures....

The body damage. It's hard to see unless your on the ground.

The damage to the radiator. It is kind of hard to see, but it is right next to the shitty worm clamp.

Fuck I hate my car.

that's actually not too bad considering. looks like you need to switch to an ebay IC and adopt an "around the radiator" setup instead of an "under the radiator" setup. I used to have the same problem with my RX7 IC, so i know how aggravating it is.

Fuck yeah I need to. I knew this kit was shitty, but damn. I'm trying to sell this stuff to help fund my repairs, and to get MS working. Hopefully someone needs some of it...

in the least you should chop shit down and make the pipes hug the radiator.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, you changed your sig!

Yea, the miata crowd is the first I've seen to put a R in there...

To the OP, get the around the rad. setup and then you'll probably never hit anything ever again.

I don't think I can. The hose will kink if I go any tighter. What I need to do is go back in time and not do things half-assed and then fix them later. It's so much cheaper to do things right the first time.

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to put it away for the winter.

Braineack 09-23-2007 02:53 AM

looks like you can chop about 4" off both the hose and pipe and have no problems.

A similar thing happened to me on my road trip this summer. My buddy was in his Z3 and I was following on I70 in WV. My buddy was behind a big pickup so he couldn't really see ahead. I was several car lengths behind him and saw a tire sitting in the right lane, so I move over to the left. The pickup runs over the tire no prob, my buddy runs it over and sends it up in the air and straight at me. I slammed on the brakes, the tire landed in front of me, and I ran it over. If I hadn't braked, it would've landed on my hood/windshield.

The Z3 had no damage other than a broken fuel vapor return hose.

My car had a big dent in my intercooler, it destroyed the black plastic cowling in front of the IC, and ripped off my front license plate. Oh, and it got melted rubber on the bottom of my shiny muffler. :gay:

Maaan.
I should take a picture of my under radiator set up haha
it sits hella lower then yours.
I scrape it every once in a while on bumps when i forget to slow down, but other then that...ehhh its alright.

Under the rad is seriously the worst idea ever. I forget why I talked myself into it. This winter I'm clocking the turbo and running around the rad. Then this kit will be for sale.

miataspeed, your car has bad juju. next thing you know your ass will be upside down in a ditch.

sell. now. g'luck. a least you were ok?

Road debris sucks..:nono: Comming back from the gap event this year (7hr drive) with the miata and wife's corolla wagon (with Dog and baby in Corolla - yeah I know it's getting replaced with something that can tow the miata) I ran over a big rig tie down strap (metal buckle inculded...). The strap was perfectly crossing the lane and no where to move to avoid it. I ran over it - wife ran over it.. 10mins later she calls me and says car is vibrating (no exits in sight).. 3mins after this I watch in rearview as a huge bellow of smoke pours off her RFront wheel.. we stop, long story short the buckle destroyed the RFront drive shaft - wheel bearing and since the bearing was sooo cooked in it could not be removed on a press even with a torch so new steering knuckle needed too... I watched the guy hit 25tons of pressure on the press trying to remove it, this is when I stepped back and the die slipped off sideways - I thought the guy was a gonner but nope it missed him...
So this all occured 100mi from home... limping back on I40 at 45mph is the suck.:td:
