i might have blown my turbo

i have a DSM 13g. i did a little work on the intercooler pipes today and put my boost controller back on set to 14psi. first pull ok, it spooled up and held boost for a few seconds, but now it just doesnt want to spool up. and it only will make like 2-3psi in 1st gear. it will get to 9psi at most, but takes forever, and you cant really hear it spool like it did before. i might have some boost leaks, but i should still be able to hear the turbo spool up. no smoke that i can see. i even swaped a different BOV over, and it had no change. i will try and mess with the charge pipes some tomorow, but everything seems to look ok. :vash:

i might just say screw it and get one of these

what about your megan manifold?

Braineack 02-09-2008 07:47 PM

only a few ways a turbo can fail. the blades are rubbing against the walls, it has no blades or the oil "seals" leak oil.

sounds liek you simply have an exhaust or boost leak. bet you lost a coupler, happen to almost everyone you finally breaches 10psi.

bryantaylor 02-09-2008 08:04 PM

all the couplers are still there. mani is fine, you can hear it when it was cracked.

dude i had the same trouble on my 16g turned out to be a leak on my compressor from where i clocked the turbo.

i will check that, but i never even touched the turbo really today.

Take apart or reinstall couplers/clamps? I vote boost leak.

bryantaylor 02-09-2008 09:08 PM

it was fine the first time i boosted, it turned to shit while i was driving. i will triple check the pipes again tomorow

magnamx-5 02-09-2008 09:36 PM

If it was fine until you hit boost for abit something is leaking. You can
A presurize the system to leak test it
B take apart and reinstall all the components
C give up and drive a slow NA
Two of these options should appeal to you GL.

m2cupcar 02-09-2008 11:04 PM

I agree - taking apart and reassembling was what fixed my mystery leak

bryantaylor 02-09-2008 11:15 PM

i have done it once already, but i will try again. but i am kinda dreaming of a t3/t4 now, lol. i wonder how bad the spool up time will be?

miatamania 02-10-2008 12:09 AM

that would depend on the size...

I've vote a leak somewhere.

m2cupcar 02-10-2008 10:09 AM

I think somebody posted 10psi at 4200rpm - but there's a LOT of deciding factors on spool, including the actual components of the t3/t4 (as mentioned). That would be too much turbo for a small engine IMO.

i bet the spool will be better than what you are dealing with now

LOL, thanks paul

well sports fans, it was a hairline crack in the mani. but it was so small, i couldnt feel any air coming out while at idle. but as soon as i touched it with the welder, it burned right through. it all back together and boosting now, woot!
