I slaughtered my Torsen... *video*

Strong my ass :eek4: If anyone is selling a torsen.. Let me know! |
"Whoops.." HAHAHAHAHA
Damn, that does suck though.. At least you got it on video |
Damn dude, never seen one fail like that. Did the ring gear do that damage to the case? But seriously though- LOL at that last comment. "That's a big-ass hole."
|
holy shit first time seeing that too! that shit sounded good though man
|
The line worker that pushed me off the track picked up a chunk of the case for me, and it his impressions of the ring gear in it. I couldnt really see inside, so thats all I can think of right now. I'll tear it apart this week after work to see what happened. I still cant believe the damn thing broke, I allways heard how "strong" the Torsens are..
|
Maybe the ring gear broke, since it should be the weak link compared to the torsen. Hoepefully it didn't take out the torsen with it.
|
It looks like the ring gear broke. When you get a new diff, get the ring & pinion cryogenic treated before you install it.
|
Funny thing is, I was just talking about that, trying to convince my friend to do it when he rebuilds his M3, and it didn't even dawn on me to cryo treat the replacement torsen...
Does anyone know what all it takes for a RX7 diff swap? One of my sevens may have a LSD, and I would be more than willing to sacrifice it for the better of my Miata haha. I haven't researched it at all. |

Hey, if you decide to go with a seven lsd you can give me that old torsen you have. If it's repairable, I'll get a ring gear for it.
|
Im hoping its repairable so I can just throw in a ring gear and case and call it a day. :p
|
+1 on getting it chryo'd. It's super duper cheap too.
|
i've never heard they were that strong, just that they don't wear out like the clutch types. I have a friend that's broken 2 on his 270hp m2. That's why FM was offering the Guru differential.

Im wondering if it would be possible to shoot the ring gear out, and not damage the torsen. Im assuming nothing was spared, it would only take one little tooth off the ring gear getting stuck in a gear on the torsen to ruin it. Plus, the rear end is locked up, which confirms my fears even more..

I could see drag racing doing that.

cryogenic treatment
I got a couple PM's regarding cryo'ing parts. There are many places that do it, this was the first result generated from a google search
http://www.metal-wear.com/racing_component_prices.htm Expect to pay $75-100 to cryo a ring and pinion. The process involves super cooling the item with liquid nitrogen and bringing it up to room temperature again. I am not qualified to give a great explanation, but essentially the extreme cold causes the item's structure to compress in on itself, and when it warms again, material stresses are all but completely removed. It makes the item much stronger and less prone to fracturing. Alot of folks also cryo their valves, pistons and/or blocks. It promotes even heat distribution. |
An instructor reccomended www.300below.com , they are in Illinois so its close to me. I want to cryo treat my next set of brake rotors.. Curious to see how much of a difference it would actually make.

Nothing in our drivetrain lasts at a drag strip.

Damn.
