Default dead oil pump

so... my damned oil pump died on me this morning. I changed the oil (ran cheap stuff for 2 weeks to "flush the system" after install), and after changing the oil no pressure.

To make sure it wasn't just the gauge I pulled the feed line off the turbo and cranked it over... let it run for 1-2 sec and no oil came out. So, it's definitely my pump.

I bought a melling replacement. Anyone have experience with these? I've liked a lot of their other aftermarket stuff, but the oil pump is a bit more critical than your average part.

Also, the engine had all of it's gaskets, water lines, and mounts (mazda comp) replaced last year when I swapped it for a fresher engine. Anything else you folks can think of I should change while the motor is out? I haven't got the cash for a rebuild right now and it shouldn't need it since it only ran for a very short period at 800 rpm without oil. I'd say it saw a max of 30 seconds. Not great for longevity, but it shouldn't have hurt too bad in the short term.

So what did mazda change on the 97's that the oil pumps die?

Every single thread I see with a dead oil pump is pretty much a 97.

yep. seems like a high precentage of oil pump failures "happen" to be 97's. there are a few threads on gheymiata.net about it.

I'm guessing the relief valve is stuck open. When you cranked it, a piece of trash got stuck in it and it's dumping all the oil it pumps, not making any pressure. I would doubt the gears actually broke, and if they did, I would think you would have heard it happen.

This is my own idea and may not work, but you could try it. If it is the valve, perhaps you could apply pressure to the engines oil system to maybe 'pop' that stuck valve free. Use an airgun hooked up to a compressore and shoot say 60-100 psi or even more into the oil feeldline that normally goes to the turbo. Perhaps you could get that vavle to unstick. Maybe pour thick oil into the feed line and then use lots of pressure.

That's assuming the valve is the problem though. I don't know, but I would guess it is especially if the failure happened after changing the oil.

EDIT: If it is a stuck valve, sometimes just letting it sit a few days the valve will pop back and not be stuck anymore. If you suspect it's the valve, let the car sit a few days, maybe lube it using oil and an air gun through your oil line that feeds the turbo, and try cranking it a week from now and see if it goes back to working.

Our relief valves are notoriusly weak man for sure, if i where you i would pull it and swap in the new pump it is good insurance if nothing else the old pump can be a home for some billet gears in the future

my 97 oil pump quit this past summer. pressure relief valve suck open.

melling pump would not work on my car, because it was not machined for the crank sensor, which 97s have. 99 and newer should be same as a 97 pump.

i did not pull motor, probably would've been easier to change if i did.

i used a pump by Rock. seemed better than melling.

PATSMX5: I'm positive that the relief is stuck, but I'm not interested in trying to unstick it. If I do it may fail again while cruising on the highway which will take out my engine.

whaaamx5: I said my DAMNED pump failed... not my damaged pump

Left Field: I appreciate that note. I'll take a close look at the pump before I bring it home to make sure it has the sensor mount.

How did you drop the pan to change the pump with the motor in the car? On my car and every other BP, B6 i have taken apart the oil pump can only be removed once the pan is lowered a good bit.

this is a moot point, all I have to do is pull the bellhousing bolts and the engine it out.

the new melling pump DOES have the mount for the CPS, so perhaps the previous poster went to an autoparts store that gave him the wrong year part or something.
