Ideas for opening locked deck lid?

For some unknown reason, my key latch and pull cable is not releasing the catch for the deck lid. I haven't resorted to disconnecting the cable from the lever to see if I could get more pull - but if that doesn't work - hell, what else can be done? I mean, my beer is locked in the trunk - that's about as bad as leaving the kiddos in a parked car on a 100F day...

I've had this fear for a long time, in for answer.

What kind of beer?

Also in for answer and beer type...

fooger03 05-21-2011 09:52 AM

You could use the key?

sterVin 05-21-2011 09:54 AM

I had to break apart my right side license plate light with a hammer and chisel until I had access to the pull rod from the lock. It's not fun and you end up with a broken light but beer is more important.

Braineack 05-21-2011 10:12 AM

hahah. are you kidding?

you can drill behind the plate where the dimple is. right side. you can access the pull there and use needle nose pliers to pull it back to the right.

Re-read post #1!! Key latch no-worky...

Thank Brain - will attempt poking the hole after beer restock and several down the pipe - I'm about as cheap as they get - Yuengling -sorry to disappoint, I have a turbo to save up for! And hey - I'm not picky, however, I am partial to a good Hefeweizen, Breckenridge brewery's hefe proper - but Blue Moon is a cheaper substitue and gets the job done

pusha 05-21-2011 10:23 AM

Yuengling is cheap? That shit is way too rich for my blood.

FRT_Fun 05-21-2011 10:27 AM

Yuengling in Alabama? I thought that was exclusively East coast brah.

fooger03 05-21-2011 10:30 AM

yuengling has been slowly traveling down the east coast and creeping west in the southern states.

Sadly, the beer which originated in Pennsylvania is still unavailable to those of us in Ohio.

Crossing state lines FTW!

Then you need to join some Nasa-se event, free Yuengling at sat's end track day... and BBQ.

Ehhh... compared to some others - or I just don't notice. Just don't do the american standards like BL, Miller, and - Pabst

Need to change thread topic as "Save my locked up beer!!"

Can't do real American beers, can't open a trunk...

GeneSplicer 05-21-2011 11:23 AM

You're a Pabst lover ain't you....

I guess, other than using brute force and going at it with a sledgehammer...

Can you get Widmer beers over there? Their Hefe is my cheap beer of choice. They're local though, I'm not sure how far out they distribute.

GeneSplicer 05-21-2011 01:59 PM

I haven't seen them - then again I haven't been looking. Now that you mention it, I'll keep an eye out.

Anyway, drilling a hole and gaining access to the release rod worked like a charm. Several weeks ago I pulled the key lock mechanism b/c the previous owner broke a key off inside (this is on my '93 DD). Appearently I had several too many beers when I put it back in (lever down) which put the release rod in a bind. I could turn the key, but it'd just flex the rod. One would think I tested it out - so did I, but chances are I was just being dumb - and add a several beers to that and then I'm dumb-as-fuck.

Theres a WAY better way.

Get under the back of it look up, push out the 2 rubber bungs. use your phone light into the left one .
Push something into the right hand one up at the bottom of the lock, you will see the latch that holds the rod, you push it diagonally upwards and to the passenger side of the car (assuming your car is lhd) Lid will unlock.

Protip: You can use the fat end of the antenna for this so if you still have one you have no excuses at all.

Wouldn't that only work for those of us without carpet? There you go drinkin and thinkin again...

nitrodann 05-28-2011 09:25 PM

Firstly, who has carpet?
Secondly Its worth a try just pushing the carpet up and out of the road, assuming your boots not packed full.

Ok, But I dont have carpet or the rearmost trim panel, I assumed that a lot of guys here would be the same. You guys arent the type of pussies on the aussie forum who whinge if you suggest that their new gearknob wont infact improve performance.

My car came without a lever or even a lock on the back, with just a hole ripped open. I took a close hanger, and putt a little 180* bend in the end, and when pulling from left to right while facing the rear of the car, you can pull the hanger through the hole back and forth till it catches and releases. I then installed a trunk latch from u-pull-it.

Let me know if this works! Should only take you a few minutes, no cutting required ;)
