idle problems

Ok so after getting a small tune my car ran beautifully for a few days. Yesterday after doing a few highway pulls with a friend i was heading home and my car was running rich again and breaking up and stalling at stop lights. After aa few hours of sitting i went outside to drive it and it cranked right up but began to idle low and now everytime i hit the throttle it falls on its face. I swapped mafs and didnt fix it. I checked my couplers too see if they popped off or leaked and they are fine. Please let me know if you guys have any ideas or suggestions. Thanks !

Drop the bandaids and get a real ECU?

Eunos93 04-26-2013 07:36 AM

I have ms1 but every tuner I've been to has had problems using it. Someone sell me a "real" ecu lol!

sixshooter 04-26-2013 08:17 AM

I have an MS1. I tuned it myself with no prior experience, just a little help from the threads here. I'm very happy with it.

So you did all of the things above but didn't pull a read the spark plugs yet? How about your fuel pressure. I hope you aren't using the Walbro 255 with a stock regulator.

Eunos93 04-26-2013 10:10 AM

Well when i got it tuned my ms1 wasnt connecting with the program he had so he had an safc lying aroound and he gave me a basic tune. We started to go up in boost and it made 247 at 13lbs running pretty clean but at 3500 rpm it kept leaning out to 14.7 no matter how much fuel he added there. So we went down to 10 lbs of boost. And it made 220 mint. This was only temporary until I got an up to date ecu. A few days later me and a friend doing highway pulls as he road tunes his se-r, we stop to check our plugs. Mine weren't bad so I re-installed them and on my way to my girls house it starts acting up, running rich and stalling. So it died there. Yesterday my tuner came over and got it running by just taking fuel away. He took as much as he could away and it runs fine now but at idle afrs are reading around 11.2 which has him baffled because on the dunk he couldn't add enough fuel to cure that lean spot. But now he takes away all the fuel he can and its still running a little rich. He mentioned my stock fpr and said maybe I need to upgrade it or its faulty. So that's my next move and maybe a better ecu. If you say ms1 is good enough maybe I'll give it another try. What program are you running for your ms1. Mind you I have a 1.8 swap in my 93 so I'm thinking I could also use a variablethrottle body too!

If you're going to use MS, then use MS. Drop the "tuner."

If you don't have what it takes to learn and use MS, then buy an ECU from your "tuner" and let him go to town. Prepare to pay much more than your car is worth.

Everything you need to learn MS is here, but you have to make at least a "tiny" bit of effort.

Eunos93 04-26-2013 10:35 AM

Trust me I'm computer illiterate i wish i had what it takes to do it myself, I would save a lot of $. Im afraid to blow my engine because I made a tuning error. Safety> power as far as I'm concerned

hornetball 04-26-2013 10:51 AM

In that case, I would get with your tuner and follow his recommendations. Every tuner will have an ECU that they are comfortable with. You'll find a willing buyer for your MS on here.

Eunos93 04-26-2013 11:11 AM

Yea he's recommending a greedy emanage blue or ultimate if I want 2 step. So I'm searching forums for either or! Maybe a brand new one if I can't find it. My problem is not a lot of tuners in my area has used ms. He's the only one that has but only ms3 in escort gtx's

Megasquirt with autotune basically tunes the car for you. MS1 > Greddy. Do you have a laptop and a serial to usb connector? Hook up your MS1 and get things going. I hope you didn't fook something up with that highway pull.

Car runs fine now I'll definitely do a compression check today but if you're willing to help me out with my megasquirt I'm willing to pay you for your time. Let me know!

The Walbro 255 commonly overpowers the stock fuel pressure regulator. The FPR might have been holding back the pressure initially and then failed, rendering you a rich mixture where it was lean before. It may intermittently work well and then fail again if this is indeed what occurred. Either an aftermarket FPR, or a stock pump or Walbro 190 pump would help if this is indeed what happened. You will need to check to know.

Eunos93 04-26-2013 01:02 PM

I have a feeling that's the issue, I'm gonna check fuel pressure. I alreadyhave an after market fpr so I may as well use it. I have a begi fmu installed but when I first hooked it up it dumped fuel no matter how much I adjusted it so I disconnected the vacuum line on it and haven't used it since. Do you think using it would help out or make things worse? There is a lot of variables for such a simple setup smh!

sixshooter 04-26-2013 01:58 PM

Sell the Begi rrfpr.

hornetball 04-26-2013 02:23 PM

If you do the MS and do it right (hopefully get Alex to help you), then stock fuel pump and FPR is the way to go. You've got plenty of injector and a good way to control them.

Sounds like you have a couple good parts and then a clusterf*ck of band-aid fuel/spark management. Is your MS1 ready to be hooked up? Was it hooked up? Is it wired correctly? Who built it? I would take a look at it for you if you were closer. Hartford is 1.5 hours from me. Take some pictures of your setup including the MS1. If you need help with it you might want to open a thread in the megasquirt section.

It has been hooked up before but the tuners ive delt with said its too ancient and the last tuner ive been to couldnt even connect with it. Im guessing his ms program was newer than my ms. But im always in new haven so i'd be willing to drive it to you. I bought the ms1 on here from bikersam717 last year but idk who built it. It came already pre-wired and what not. I'll take some pics and upload them!

AlexL 04-26-2013 04:30 PM

MS1 is old but good. Depending on who you ask. The new version of Tunerstudio definitely still talks to it, and autotune (VEAL) works too.

P.s. I just popped into some old threads you created and see you've been struggling to get the MS running for a while. You need to ditch the AFM, hook everything up correctly, get a decent basemap and then tune. Do you not have the time to read a little bit? I understand you don't trust yourself so you're afraid to blow up the car but you really have to take some responsibility. This is a miata not a ferrari.

Eunos93 04-26-2013 04:38 PM

Ok well let me know if you want to at least take a look at what I have and see if it's good enough!

vitamin j 04-26-2013 05:41 PM

Fuck your "tuners" spend an hour reading and tune it yourself. If he swapped an SAFC for the MS1 he doesn't know shit about what's ancient tech or not...but he is right about your fpr.
