I've got an engine on a stand I'm currently tearing down.
Holy handgrenades Batman! Every damn surface I touch is sharp as a razor. Casting flaws, machined edges, etc. I'm pretty careless about things like that and my hands and fingers are cut to pieces. I've got one slice in a knuckle that I superglued that should have had a stitch or two. Attachment 15085 Screw that. I'm taking a file to every sharp edge that doesn't have to be sharp. I should have worn some of those kevlar gloves for meat cutting. :idea: Makes me look badass though. All my knuckles are bloodied but my face is still pretty! :giggle: |

Castings suck. Deburring one edge only exposes another. What I really hated was using rags to wipe something clean, like the top of the block before installing the HG and head. Stupid rags would leave a bunch of lint around the edges. My GF's a NICU nurse though, and brings home their sterile lint free rags all the time. They're 10x better than the standard red ones.

Deburring tool...get one.
I took my work one home after I removed the cams last week and saw the amazing burrs that get left when they hone those bearing surfaces. Hard to believe that shit was just hanging there for ~100K miles. |

man I've torn 2 engines down this week (miata and e30) and not a scratch!
However i've got a nasty burn on the back of my right hand from touching my manifold on accident feeling for an exhaust leak. Looks like a Herpe. |
Not a scratch comes from knowing what you are doing and paying attention to stuff that could hurt. Neither of those apply to me. Until I had both hands well bloodied I never thought "gee, if this bolt turns loose suddenly I'm going to bash my knuckles". I'm a slow learner and like they said in The Replacements, pain heals and chicks dig scars.
Still, I can't believe how sharp every edge is. I'm going to hone/file/debur a lot of casting flaws out and chamfer some edges. May save some bloody knuckles down the road. Particularly when the engines back in the car. |
I had paper-cut like slices on my finger tips. I was using latex gloves too.

Use a piece of pipe as a breaker bar on the end of your rachet so you don't have to apply as much power. Or torque. Whatever.

Deburrinbg your block, Etc. is an old,accepted right of passage when building a high performance engine,V-8 guys have been doing it since the beginning of time.It also removes stress risers that form from vibration and heat cycling,leading to cracks.Not to mention it makes the thing look good when painted.Carbide burr on a die grinder works well for me,requires practice,eventually this skill will lead to porting heads.

I have plenty of ratchets that work fine, and I do that to them from time to time. My dad does it to his old (purchased in the early '70s) ratchets and they're still holding up...
