I'm thinking engine management, then swap, then turbo right?

My money sittuation is good to go, thanks to my recent notification that I'm going to Oklahoma City for 3 months minimum.

I'm thinking I should do megasquirt (full stand alone, no stock ecu) on the 1.6 first. Then I should gut the wrecked 99 and stuff all that in the car, then do the turbo kit right?

Are the 1.6 brakes with hawk hp+ going to be scary on the track in a car with a stock 1.6?

Splitime 02-04-2007 01:48 PM

Sounds like a great order of things.

cjernigan 02-04-2007 01:49 PM

+1 Sounds like a plan to me.

hustler 02-04-2007 01:51 PM

I can't make myself pony up the cash for this shit. I'm such a pussy.

hustler 02-04-2007 01:51 PM

btw, this car is going to be sick.

Fireindc 02-04-2007 02:45 PM

Sounds rad.

Afterwards are you moving back to tx?

If so im getting a ride in your car.

A good friend of mine just got a fm2 w/ link in his car, and im also dying to ride in that... Gotta hurry up and graduate so i can move back to tx.

i still live in Dallas, and plan on living there for most of my life. I just travel constantly for work. There are like 12 cars at 200whp or better in circle here, all but 2 are blown.

akaryrye 02-04-2007 03:12 PM

so what are you plans again?, im sure youve talked about it before, but sounds like you are swapping stuff from a wrecked 99 into a 1.6 shell?

Al Hounos 02-04-2007 04:51 PM

Sounds good, except I'd build the 99 motor (get it ready for a GT30 or 32) while it's out of the car.

adbradley 02-04-2007 04:59 PM

yeah get in on the MS group guy!!

you are correct. I'm not doing forged internals, but I will get everything freshened up with arp hardware and bearings. i have a 99 swap car that I'm gutting, and stuffing in the 91...then parting out the rest.

I want to make as much power as the stock 1.8 drive train will hold. I'll be happy with like 230whp, but I don't think I will go over 260 or so. I don't really know how much boost I want to run. I originally intended to leave the car at stock compression, but now I'm considering a copper head gasket with an o-ringed head. Right now I plan running stock compression and like 9 psi.

I don't want to drop another $2k on building up the motor, if I'm never going to make enough power to use it.

orly? Link please.

agree- get the MS installed and sorted on a known working setup (what you have now), then all you have to do is retune when you swap the "hardware".

I'm worried it will be a waste of time though...when I can just tune once. I don't really know what to do.

I don't know if I want to tune it on the fly, or just pay someone to stick in on the dyno and tune.

jayc72 02-04-2007 08:49 PM

You might want to re-think the MS setup if you think you'll be able to pay someone to tune it then never have to touch it again. Hell any stand alone will require some fukcing about from time to time.

I want to get max power from the thing...and I don't really know how to do that. Once it gets done right, it will be close for a long time. I don't know where to start with the VE table, even after reading the manual, however I am committed to going it alone.

so I made a thread in the ms forum to educate myself.

neogenesis2004 02-04-2007 09:18 PM

You really dont need to worry about the VE thing honestly. If you start with the .msq that al hunous posted in the settings thread you can tune from that. It is rich enough to be safe to run to start. With the VE table if you increase the number you add fuel, if you decrease the number you subtract fuel. A single digit with VE can change your afr abour .5:1

oh, cool. Does anyone know of a book that will explain the basics of tuning a turbo engine to me? I would rather read everything I need to know, rather than annoy everyone here.

I understand what you mean, I often pray to just find a complete resource be able to browse though. You're not annoying anyone I'm sure. I think what helped me most was to just write down the keywords of everything I had questions about MS wiseand the I searched the msefi.com forums.

VRTSid 02-05-2007 10:58 AM

get the MS and tune NA, delete the maf, and rock the filter on the TB for a while. then when you get boost its just drop it off at the dyno to get your maps adjusted right?

sounds like fun to me.
