Intake issue, questions need answers

Okay my issue, I have a Garret T3 turbo miata. The person who ownt it before me placed the intake going from my turbo to being In front of the radiator. My friend in attempt to fix this and get me fresher air for the intake, basicaly took out the piping and had it set from Turbo-Modulator-Filter with no piping in between. The o2 sensor which was blugged in is now freeballin it. The car RUNS far faster han it did before, yet there are issues. When idling the car seems like its fighting to not stall out, also it runs VERY lean and shoots out white smoke. My onset which i can read from my (ECU manigmant [flyin miata]) is going from low 30's to high 70's. The pre-owner said to me "The o2 sensor controls the onset and idle rev... ect" i am unsure the smartest way to fix this simple problem. I believe I will try putting a small elbow pipe from the turbo-the modulator and drill a hole sized for the o2 sensor.

I can easily just put the entire system back the way it was but I hate having the intake right in front of the radiator. My goal is to just get the filter ending right behind the headlight. I dont plan to drive the car with fair warning and will be fixing the issue asap so quick replies are apreciated.

Sorry this is a serious newby question I am new to working/tunning cars and this system is pretty complicated.

by "freeballin" do you mean its just hanging somewhere not attached to anything?

Savington 05-01-2008 01:13 AM

Nothing in your post makes any sense. Just sell your car now before you fuck it up.

Hey, it beats installing it in the intake. :squint:

why the hell does it matter wher eyou have your intake near? unless you have teh fuckin intake RIGHT ABOVE THE TURBO, a "cold air intake" isnt going to help much after you install an intercooler. just drive the damn thing and leave it be.

or sell your car before you fuck it up.

what do you mean by o2 sensor? it is not near the intake. show us a pic of what you are talking about.

Fireindc 05-01-2008 03:08 AM

o2 in the intake?! :giggle:

Jaxon... people are giving you shit because a lot of the stuff you said makes no sense or you're not using the right terminology... but we really can help.
Best thing for you to do is take some pictures. Subrscibe to photobucket or flickr or somthing, upload the pics there and link them in your next post. I don't think we're going to be able to help unless you can be MUCH clearer or send us pics.

And it would also be extremely helpful if you made a COMPLETE list of EVERY SINGLE MOD on the car and posted it.

you dont put your exhaust gas sensor in your intake?

I often try the dumbest way to fix simple problems and it works. :bigtu:

I did before it blew the welds on it :(

I think maybe he means IAT sensor when he says O2 sensor? And maybe modulator is his word for AFM/MAF? Maybe english isn't his first language...

Okay a friend missguided me and I was a bit tipsy and confused when writing that. My Intake leading from the turbo goes directly down in front of the radiator and the filter is nearly 2 inches from it but still in front of it. A lot of mechanics have told me to get a small elbo style pipe and lead it where the filter will end in front of the headlight. The sensor I was calling the o2 (my bad relax...) was the map sensor. As of now its set like this, the pipe leads out and goes in front of the radiator. At the end of the pipe is the mass air sensor (box) followed by the filter. The Map sensor is in the piping coutioned by rtv silicone gray non conductive type filling (in order to absorb shock). I basicaly came here to correct myself and hopefuly save myself from looking like a dick.

I reset my ECU got my onset down to 32 on and idle and then (following directions) beat the shit outa the car a little and it founds its settings back to 26-29. This solved my chopy idling, and excess white smoke due to the car running lean.

Now my issue is this, the intake is placed as i described above. It is in front of the radiator and I am told due to its placement it sucks in hot air. Ocassionaly after pushing the car- then shifting to neutral, the car idles choppy and wants to stall until i give it a little gas. When I give it the gas it corrects the idle... i am told it does that because of the heat from the radiator.

what I plan to do is simply grab the elbow sized pipe and replace it with the original pipe which would end the filter by my headlight. (ill drill a hole in the pipe for the map sensor and use the same filling to absorb the shock ["its a sensitive sensor"]
UNLESS anyone has any better ideas.

Pictures would be helpful even at this point.

However, having your air filter IN Front of the radiator doesn't seem like it would pull cold air...unless by "in front" you mean behind? In any case, hot air isn't really gonna make your idle rough by my experience. Colder mornings in my experience are more likely to make my idle rough. but then I do have all the water ducting removed from my TB and Manifold.

Sory theres another correction I have to add, I ment its BEHIND my radiator not in front...... Nd the idle will wack out and act like it wants to stall after i slightly push the car... its weird. I am told its because its being fed hot ass air from the radiator+my filters butchered

I think (or at least I hope) you're still a bit confused here. There is no way a MAP sensor would be installed pre-turbo. I believe the sensor you're trying to describe is the intake air temperature sensor. But we really need to see some pictures here.

Huh? Which ECU are you running? What do you mean by "onset"?

No, that's not your issue. A lot of us are running our air filters in a sub-optimal location, and we're not having these problems.

Your issue is that you don't seem to be very familiar with how your car works.
