Intake manifold swappage????

So I was thinking, the 2001+ intake has long runners similar to the 99-00 VICS system..... but without the butterflies. While the 94-97 has a shorter runner. Obviously having a boosted car means runner length is less important.
So, might it be possible to swap out the 2001+ intake manifold for a 94-97 intake manifold?

It can be done! You need to modify the bolt holes a little as the ports are higher on a 99+ IIRC.

I used to run a 94-97 on my old 99 setup before I used ther BEGI.

I'm actually thinking of porting and cutting out all the VICS from my 2000 manifold. I've been search for results from doing this with no luck. Trying to avoid a none OEM manifold so I don't get harassed by the smog police.

Not easily, but possible. The heads are pretty different. Keith Tanner has pictures of modifying a 97 manifold to fit a 99 head in his book. I have Atl93's copy of said book at home.

Was considering doing the same.

I also have a vics setup, and I wouldn't mine not dealing with it. What if I just take the butterflies out?

There is plenty of evidence to support using the VICS system. "dealing with it" is comprised of setting up a shift light and 2 minutes of tuning. :jerkit:

the question of usefulness comes in only with big power cars.

I am pretty sure the flange is the same, so yes it is possible, but you will not see any gains IMO.
Pick up a thrashed mani, cut the flange off and dremel it smooth, find yourself a welder and make your own mani.

the 2001 VTCS can be removed--FM does it all the time. they are actually an obstruction for flow even when they're open..

Bolt spacing is the same.. Flange is different! I have a JDM (no egr port) 94-97 Intake manifold at home which I modified to work on the 99 head. Took me about 5 minutes to modify with a dremel and used it for about 2 years on my car.

Well, the reason im contemplating this is because when emissions comes around im going to need to change the injectors out. Well, rather then fuckign with the top half bullshit and having long runners that i don't need, i figure i'd just swap to the 94-97 intake manifold and do one of those spacers at th esame time (i know i need longer studs to do this)

Ben 06-11-2008 11:47 AM

dude removing the top half of the intake mani is way easier than pulling the whole thing off, not to mention all the other work involved.

Stealth97 06-11-2008 11:48 AM

I have not even bothered with my VICS yet :gay: its just open.

I'd imagine he wants to do it once, so he can more easily swap the injectors every year for smog. Certainly easier to swap injectors on an NA.

can you R&R injectors without removing the 94-97 intake?

I figured it was just like the 1.6. Loosen the rail and pop the injectors out. Isn't it? Hell, I've never owned a '94-97.

yup. I once had to chage a set of o-rings in a parking lot and did it with ease (on my 96)

Zabac 06-11-2008 03:34 PM

Same here, only I was in Asheville, 200ish miles away from home, took 10 minutes, now my friends NB, damn, what a pain in the ass.

Marc,

Paul did this. He ported out a 99 intake manifold and totally took out the butterflies. Lemme see if I find the pics from it. He did NOT dyno it though to see if it made any improvements. It may be possible for me to use this manifold to see what kind of gains I can make with it.

Zabac 06-11-2008 04:34 PM

Do it!

cjernigan 06-11-2008 07:30 PM

There is a pretty substantial amount of port work that goes along with the '99-00 manifold and removing the VICS setup.
Trackdog racing offers this service and Paul did it as well. After you remove the VICS butterflys you have to weld the holes shut or possibly drill and tap them for NPT plugs.
