Intercooler upgrade
Anyone have a "best fit" size turbo intercooler to upgrade to. I have the OEM intercooler piping but no intercooler. Will be running low boost (<15psi).

I am assuming you have an MSM because you have OEM piping. Any ebay intercooler would be fine. CX racing is popular. I have a mishimoto intercooler on my MSM.

I assume this is the good point. Also, I read your thread; very good. I was leaning towards the longer, less height (28 x 5.5 x 2.5) also, rather than the shorter, taller (18 x 12 x 2.5) like the OEM intercooler. The 28 x 5.5 x 2.5 looks like it would get more direct airflow. |
It is not ideal. After talking to a few folks more knowledgeable than myself about these things I concluded that more height than 5.5 is needed. Just because that size "fits the mouth" the best doesn't really make it the best.
What you want is as many turbulators as possible. Also pay attention to how they're positioned inside: the "straight" ones wont be as efficient than the ones criss-crossing all the time. You want as much air to hit as many of those and dissipate heat through them and into the tubes/outside as possible. Exchange heat if you will. If they go through a core with all straight fins like the ebay one, its not as effective. Now, is that a deal breaker? Probably not. Esp since you're running a very low power setup on low boost. But there is a difference. You want something taller, like 28x7x2.5 or even taller. Also I decided I liked bar/plate over tube/fin because its stronger and can take more abuse. Most also prefer it and claim it superior over tube/fin. Although the tube/fin or "deltafin" ones will let more air flow through them and get to the radiator easier. Its a tradeoff between iat's and airflow to the radiator. If you have proper ducting/shrouding, airflow shoudln't be a problem anyway. |

Yeah I know, the inlet endtank is bigger than the outlet to allow for a plate that diverts some of the airflow to the top of the core.

yeah yeah I know. Except on the 01+ there is no a/c stuff there to worry about. So I plan to "re-center" mine

Im pretty sure they also do the endplates that way for air to flow better through the core AND to "seal" the mouth and force all air through the IC core.

The ebay 28x7x2.5 from ilovetacotaco (yeah, I know, but that's the seller's ID) would work fine for you. It's the one that I have in my car. Tube & fin for greater airflow to the radiator. I wouldn't be concerned with relative strength differences between bar&plate and tube&fin intercoolers. At $67 shipped, buy two and consider it a wear item protecting your expensive radiator from rock chips.
Available in black for those who prefer not to advertise. Pics of my intercooler install in this thread. I used the same routing that the MSM does. Edit: should not be difficult to figure out what adapters you need to make best use of the piping you currently have. I believe you will have to trim the intercooler outlet piping quite a bit. |
