interested in the 2jz i6 miata motor swap

Alright miata pros,

I've done a regular 1.6 miata motor swap. I've done turbo setup with link engine management on my 1992 miata.

What is needed for an i6 2jz swap?

My understanding is that you need:

*cheap sc300 should have most of the parts
*custom mounts
*custom steering rack?
*custom drive shaft?

what else needs to be done?

I hear the motor offsets the car by 200 lbs in the front, but fits perfectly with no mods to the oil pan. shifter lines up 1 inch up from the shifter hole. Possible custom drive shaft, exhaust system and steering rack?

Where do you find a cheap sc300? And how much is one?

its been a supra secret for import gear heads. Shhh.. I just need help with swap.. haha

Why would you start with a SC300? Doing a NA-T swap with a r154 trans is hardly the way I'd go if I was putting 200 pounds on the nose of a Miata. And I would think you could source a NA 2JZ w/ the r154 a LOT cheaper than you can find a decent (ie not 200k mile) SC300.

The 2jz swap is one I just don't "get." 2JZ parts are expensive and there are cheaper/lighter ways to make power unless you're looking for 600+... and if you're looking for 600hp in a Miata you need to have your head examined. ;)

Yah, I know. I looked at getting one, but leaving it at a sc300. They were all over $4000 though.

I debated it before starting my V8 as there was a local SC300 that sold for $600. He thought it was fubar but all it was is the cats disintegrated and plugged the exhaust. Of course, he found this out AFTER he sold it, lol. Car had 108K on it but he knew nothing about cars so he dumped it.

first off, there is already a swap in progress by Sean. So SEARCH. He's having wiring nightmares atm afaik

second of all, I think a five-o swap would be easier and cheaper.

buffon01 09-27-2010 09:39 AM

^^ Seriously Sean discussed practically ALL that it takes to do this. Rule of thumb is that if you ask "what is needed to do a X swap?" there's a very big change you:

a) Have no basic knowledge of cars
b) Have not fab skills for all the modifications it takes to do a swap
c) Have the idea that shit is PNP

Read the thread I started and that Sean turned it into his build thread.

If you have a lot of time to spend and can think of some crazy ways to mount stuff using only limited tools and fab skills you are golden. Just make sure you put away $600 to $800 right off the bat to get your wiring harness done. I tried to wire mine myself with the help of several very knowledgeable wiring guys and still have got no where. My harness is now boxed up and ready to be shipped to get it reworked the right way so my car will run. Yea!!!. It is possible but it dose come with its downs. Everyone on M.net will hate it some people on this site like it others are unknown and most everyone else tells you to buy a supra or just do a V8 swap. I personally have done a couple LS1's into mustangs and we are working on one in an S10 they are easy compared to wiring a 2j mostly due to the fact there are people willing to help with those online for free anything that says 2JZ on it cost money to information. I had and inside help with alot of my parts with a guy who deals with these all the time I suggest you find someone and get to know them really good. For example I broke one of my knock sensors putting in my engine so I went to the parts store and oh they cant get it so I got to Toyota the guy pulls it out I go to the cashier and she says that will be $250 I told her I would come back. Defiantly did not go back and called my buddy up and he gave me one. Long story short don't be dumb like me if you want something different do it I assure it will be worth it I will tell you in a few more months but if you want it easy and everything works right do something else. I am all about as many 2JZ miatas as we can get but I am sure now I would still choose the same path for me but many many others will go to something else and it may be worth it depends on what you want.

kotomile 09-27-2010 12:39 PM

Your "typical" LSx or 5.0 swap has been done more than once and is documented on the internet.

Rotary, F20C, and SR20 swaps are less common but have been done a handful of times. Still some help out there.

Both of these options (V8, HI-PO 4/rotary) have been documented and don't add too much to the nose. The 6 is just hard to package, on top of that you're going to be pioneering the swap, as yours will be the 2nd I know of done without resorting to a tube frame.

Don't get me wrong, Sean, kudos to you for what you're doing and I wish you success, but unless the OP is a dyed-in-the-wool 2JZ nut like you are (IIRC), I don't see much reason to go down this path.

Sean 09-27-2010 04:04 PM

I am all about putting things where they don't belong and everywhere you read online anyone who has thought about this swap gets the same answer don't do it its to expensive. I belive it can be done with a reasonable budget I know this because mine is almost done other than the wiring, but with that being said you have to be willing to put in some serious time to get it there. I have more 16hr. days than I can remember in this car and more time then most people work in 6 months but it is really what I want. Just think hard on what you want and if this is it do it and I will help you as much as I can. Trust me there is no one else on the earth that I can find that will help you do this. I have called more supra specialty shops than I can think of from coast to coast and the ones that are willing to help are so busy you can never get any help and the ones that are not busy won't help you. If this is really what you want to do please do it I would love to see another one come together and also you can use your stock steering.

As a rough estimate? Probably like 250-300 man-hours if you are extremely proficient with Miatas (like, pulling the motor isn't a big deal). I don't mean to be a dick, but the fact that you're asking a question like that leads me to believe that you don't have the ability to do the swap yourself.

If you were looking for an easy swap, a 2JZ is not it. Look at LS or 5.0 swaps if you want easy.

BTW - a turbocharged 2JZ is going to add more than 200lbs to the front end. An LS is 50-100lbs more, and a dressed 2JZ-GTE weighs 200lbs MORE than an LS does.

Sean 09-28-2010 09:47 AM

Savington I am with you on the swap and as far as the weight goes I have been estimating my whole build when I get my car corner weighed I will know for shore and I am almost positive you wont be able to get a full dressed 2J in a miata mine is stripped down and barley fits.

Sean 09-28-2010 03:02 PM

I would have to say I have at least at the minimum 1000 hrs. in my conversion alone and another couple hundred to go so it defiantly takes some time.

if you have a girlfriend she will hate you or leave and if you have a wife be prepared to sleep on the couch a couple nights.lol
