ITT you may vote for my aero

I can't decide:

1 - "R" lip and 3-4" splitter, full undertray.

2 - GV (knockoff urethane) lip and no splitter, full undertray

3 - GV lip with splitter, full undertray

4 - Other (mention below please)

Car is mostly dailied, my main reason for aero is highway stability and looks, trackdays when I can afford to (years from now).

TIA

levnubhin 04-09-2010 07:14 PM

I vote #3 but didn't you already have one?

I voted for #3 but my setup is basically #2. I'm planning on adding a splitter soon, my car is track only though...

kotomile 04-09-2010 07:57 PM

I had an authentic GV (other option wasn't out yet) and it developed some big, authentic cracks... My biggest concern with 3 is ground clearance.

kewilso3 04-09-2010 08:02 PM

hard to say without seeing your ride height... GV lips only look good to me on a slammed car. Since you're even considering a splitter, I'm gonna say you're not that low, so I vote #1 on a daily driver

hustler 04-09-2010 08:18 PM

4, Rharris RB bumper and wood splitter.

WonTon 04-09-2010 08:27 PM

i voted #3

but then i read hustlers post and now say go with what the god said!

Rharris is making an RB bumper?

Dont get down on yourself like that.

3. I will end up with the same, probably. Right now I have an H-D racing "lip"/air dam, no splitter. May just add splitter to it if it doesn't drag.

I still want that bumper that Rob was talking about doing for the track guys... Sigh... If you want a RB front bumper, get ahold of John at Axis Power Racing. He has one he is trying to sell. Pretty reasonable price too and is in decent shape as I saw it when I picked up some carbon parts a month ago...

However, for your purposes as it will be daily driven and see little track duty... I vote #2.

kotomile 04-10-2010 01:13 PM

Does anyone have any measurements comparing the difference in ground clearance between a GV and the R lip? Even though the votes are 9-6 for a GV, I think for ground clearance I'd better use the R. After all, I (read: my dad who, in his defense, hadn't driven a low roadster-type car since college) smashed up my GV and adding a splitter could add up to 3/4" on top of that.

OTOH, #2 is basically what I had before (plus a bit more aerodynamic functionality), and I've raised the car 5/8" since, and the knockoff GVs are much more durable. Plus, I'd wager the undertray material wouldn't need to be as thick if it were an actual splitter.

Here are a few shots to show my height:

I'm impatient, just bought a knockoff GV. Going for #2, as I can easily morph it into #3 for track duty later and keep it streetable with the lip off.

Where can I buy the plastic for the undertray?

I've looked in the past and found tons of online sources, but it's been hard to find local suppliers.

So how much undertray are you planning? IIRC, there was some debate about running a full tray because it could keep the airflow off the trans and dif.

kotomile 04-10-2010 02:31 PM

As much as neccessary I guess. I'm going to do more homework on it when I get home this evening. Searching from iPhone is less than ideal.

hustler 04-10-2010 03:33 PM

That car is so nice.

spoolin2bars 04-10-2010 04:53 PM

even a small splitter made a huge difference on the highway, and on my car never scrapes at 11.75" ride height.

What differences did you notice?

kotomile 04-10-2010 05:13 PM

Thanks Trey.

Good to hear, spoolin. That's what I'm after.

I've been getting some guidance from Sav just now, looks like I'm going to mimic his design for Orion's car, birch plywood with aluminum tubing for support. Full-on Home Depot DIY job, or at least I hope to keep it that way.

Since it's going on a street car, I want to seal the wood grain for a smoother, "not wood" appearance. Suggestions?

Efini~FC3S 04-11-2010 09:14 PM

FYI

kotomile 04-14-2010 10:32 AM

Thanks Effini.

Got my materials yesterday. Since this is going on a street car I'm thinking a 3" protrusion from the GV lip, and as wide as the tires so I can make spats. I also picked up sandpaper and Kilz, hoping to disguise the woodgrain.

JDMAflac 04-14-2010 10:52 AM

take pictures and/or make a write-up please.

Don't hide the wood, embrace it. When I do mine, I will be getting a nice oak and putting a good varnish on it lol.

I'm dying to make this too. If work slows down, then this will be the first thing I do. Shouldn't be too hard as I can just use one the the racing beat bumpers as a starter and just add filler on top of it.

No biggie man... I'm just glad work picked back up for you.

TurboRoach 04-14-2010 12:09 PM

You guys in Texas must not have any hills or sloping driveways.

I'm at 12" and there is only ~2" between the lip and the ground. Luckily the knock off is tough because I've buried it in the pavement a couple of times on uphill switchbacks and scooped some gravel with it going into a parking lot.

kotomile 04-14-2010 12:14 PM

Nothing like that here in TX - but I'll be in NC soon enough, we'll see how practical this is out there.

I'll be taking pics, Aflac. I already have one of the wood on top of my wagon.. I'm waiting for the GV lip to show up so I can trace it onto the wood and get started. Should be here Friday.

turotufas 04-14-2010 12:28 PM

I voted #1. Oh well.

You're going to have some fun on them NC roads.

kotomile 04-15-2010 10:49 PM

I hope so.

So I apologize if the following makes no sense, but I've been drinking since 5, it's 9:47 now.

What I plan to do is put the lip on the wood, and trace the outline of it, then move the lip back 3" and trace the back of it. That should give me the basic shape. Beyond that, I'm not too sure. Should the middle section extend further back than the bumper? In other words, if you liken the shape of the splitter to a muffin, should it just be the cap or should there be a stem, and if so how much? Back to the firewall?

kotomile 04-15-2010 10:51 PM

Oh and the width will be the same as the front tires. Not sure how to modify my tracing to match that and still have it look decent. Wing it?

You want to mushroom it back as far as you can. The further back it goes, the more effective it is.
