John Deer Blitz Black? and wheel opinions..and pics :)
 

Alright...to start out, shes primer black right now...not a fan of primer, but the black does look good...see picture.

I've found thread on a hotrod forum of a guys car thats sprayed John Deer Blitz Black, a really popular color among hotrodders b/c its tough, and is flat black...pretty cool...just seeing what you guys think, and adding some interesting ideas...the paint and all cost this guy about ~$100 and he had a guy. Also, these are the wheels I want, some Rota 15x7.5s in Bronze...

i think that is the best flat black ive seen... id still go the roller paint option tho

as for the wheels black on black or black on silver... the only car that should rock gold or bronze wheels is a subie =P

I'm going to be doing this as well. I'm going with Spun wheels powder coated flat bronze.


Quick question: What is nessessary to get the paint off do you just splash thinner all over the place? Do your own write up if you don't mind that'll be a big favor to me and anyone else whos going to be attempting this

Bronze looks good. Have you considered gold. I think gold looks nicer if done right! Goodluck.

I have a buddy who put bronze konig heliums on his black miata. It looked really good. I also dont like the look of black on black. For a black car, silver, bronze, or many of the darker grey shades look good, but not black. Needs a bit of contrast to not look like a black hole.

i think a semi-gloss or satin black like on the E30 would look alot better than chalkboard flat black.

right now my car is flat black but im going to try and find some semigloss black and do that $40 paint job everyones doing

See, I have access to a friends (Ex's little bro, its good to stay friends) gun/garage so I can do it for about 100 bucks, and the kid wants to paint it for free, on the contingent that I help repair his two legend cars when he wrecks them (06 Nat'l Young guns champ in bandalero...racing semi pro legends now...kid is 15...lol)

Anyway, I figure the satin would look a lot better than the chalkboard on it now...

Nooo...I'll do a write up, or modifiy his w/ pics. If you have a coat of paint that isn't messed up ie. Peeling, cracked etc. you can just sand until your paint has a bite and just lay it down over top...or if your really trying to do it right, get the John Deer Primer and then do that color...its for tractors so its TOUGH stuff...but looks amazing.


BTW: Never use chemicals to remove paint...you have to etch(sp?) it afterwards = remove the chemical completely or the paint wont stick, and thats more trouble and more expensive than just sanding.

I agree, I like the slips b/c they are light...but black/black is just ugly...FWIW, I do have a tan top, figure that might look good w/ the satin and bronze.

i'm prolly selling mine soon. ordered some 6UL's. need some 2/3-used azenis on some wheels (plus a spare wheel) cheap??

oh I meant larger than 15x6.5...never thought about just getting 16s.

I'm thinking about the 6ul...but I was thinking a 7.5" to stay STS2 legal for a while until I went turbo.

Alright well I'll be needing this DIY write up by two weeks so start writing ;). I can't wait to get this done.. approximately how long would you say it takes? I think the first coat should take about 45 mins and the next 4 coats another 2 hours. So all togeather 3 hours is this correct?

Yep.

I'd say a couple of days total...it took me a while to prime my car but I rattle canned it...stripping everything/taping takes the longest...I'd sand the entire part you were going to do with either 220-320...enough to scuff through the clear and give the paint something to stick to, wash it, then make sure to wipe the area. with this paint, in order not to get a gloss effect, to do like 4 light coats, followed by a final heavier coat, sanding in between if needed w/ a higher grit 400-600 depending...

he describes it in the link in the first post, body work/paint takes a long time to get right.

uhh well i painted them black.
then silver (poorly) but they look ok from far away.

so they're pretty ug ug, which means dirt cheap. the fifth is still new in box though--and factory silver.

anyway, i'd take just about any reasonable offer for what their worth at this point.
