Just blew up 2nd gear at < 180rwhp!

Just turned out onto State line road heading back to the office in first gear. Stood on it around the corner, quick shift into second gear and hear a BOOM! No more 2nd! Also has this really neat noise which my phone doesn't capture very well.

Thought of something a few minutes after it blew, I heard this weird noise when sitting at a light earlier last week that sounded like a ticking. Press the clutch in and it goes away so I wrote it off as maybe a loud throwout bearing. Kind of sounds like the gearset for 2nd came apart inside and is rattling around. First, third, fourth and fifth gears all engage and you can totally drive it like that... with the horrid noise attached..

Oops.

gospeed81 03-15-2010 03:30 PM

Man...that sucks.

I think I'm going to look for another back-up tranny now. You're the third person in as many weeks I know that has lost a 5spd.

Joe Perez 03-15-2010 03:33 PM

We need a support group for you folks. Abe's been driving around with no third for the better part of a year. He just fished out all the major pieces of it, put new oil in, and kept driving.

Marc D 03-15-2010 03:34 PM

ouch. Maybe a 6spd is calling you now.

Bryce 03-15-2010 03:42 PM

Time for a six speed!

I blew my 2nd gear, and the rest followed within a week.

thesnowboarder 03-15-2010 03:45 PM

Sounded the same when third let go on my car. Blew mine with a 1.6 t25 @ 11 psi i would say sub 200whp as well.

6 speed has been holding up great ever since.

buffon01 03-15-2010 03:49 PM

Yep, thats the calling of the 6speed :D

That's pretty fucking metal :D.

timk 03-15-2010 04:23 PM

Mine sounds like it's out of a rally car, I'm sure it's just a matter of time!

elesjuan 03-15-2010 04:47 PM

Anyone have a six speed up for sale?

Savington 03-15-2010 04:57 PM

There's a guy parting a 10AE on M.net, he had an offer on the 6-speed but you might see if the guy doesn't follow through.

Sounds exactly like my 5-speed. Blew it up at 200whp, fast 2-3 shift and the gearbox sounded like a bomb went off inside it.

PM Sent!

Fast 2-3 shift? Whats that??

I had a POS short throw shifter for a little bit that I believe might've bent something out of whack on the 3rd gear fork perhaps. If I'm quick shifting from 2 to 3 it'll go into the gear position but will not engage 3rd gear however go back to neutral and slip it into third... all is well.

Fun while it lasted and thank god it wasn't the torsen. *knock on wood*

Turbo_4 03-15-2010 05:19 PM

Yikes...hope mine holds out:-/...So far I have been granny shifting and it has been holding up.

stranges12712 03-15-2010 05:24 PM

Yup that ticking is the throw out bearing, mines also pretty loud and its brand new, i think its cause i beat the shit outta it, but she held up last year at the 1/4 mile track and the clutch drops :D

No, but I have a 99 5 speed with 88K that I could drop off probably next week. I'll likely be coming through town. Or, feel free to come up and get it. I'm 3 1/2 hrs from OP.

$150 dropped off or picked up. Gotta change some wiring to put into an NA.

Cutler 03-15-2010 06:07 PM

I just sold my 6-speed that I had to a local guy who had the same problem....the 5-speeds just won't hold the power the 6-speeds will....sorry to hear about your problem.

browning 03-16-2010 07:54 AM

congrats :bigtu: yeah it sucks breaking parts but i bet you were having a blast right up till the time she went south.

Sparetire 03-16-2010 03:16 PM

How much driving has been done with the bits rattling around in there?

If you get them out it might hold up for awhile.

At least 5 speeds are common and practical right now. FM has like 5 on their salvage list for 100 bucks plus shipping.

Doppelgänger 03-16-2010 04:03 PM

I somehow blew out 2nd when in 4th in my 99. The damn thing let loose when I dropped from 5th to 4th and punched it. Shit was soo fucked that when I was limping it home, I'd coast to a stop and the gears would get jammed and lock the rear wheels (with the shifter in neutral)....it took a good clutch dump to un stick it and get going again. I rolled with no 2nd for a week and it eventually got stuck in 4th.

chicksdigmiatas 03-17-2010 11:00 PM

I blew my first 5 speed NA. It had 190k on it though. It made whining and squealing noises for a while. I was going up a hill in 5th. Clunk.... rev limit. I shift to 4th, it held for a minute, then died. The secondary shaft broke in half because the secondary shaft bearing died.

Fireindc 03-18-2010 07:01 AM

Uh oh.. my tranny has a nice loud whine in it. Its a race between the 1.6 diff and the tranny now that ive upped the boost. Which will go first?

Bryce 03-18-2010 08:09 AM

My 5 speed sounded like it had straight-cut gears for over 20k miles before it blew up.

Which will go first?
My bet is on the diff.

I'd place a wager on that. Crnrhrd broke a 1.6 diff in a weekend without even abusing it.

johnmatt 03-18-2010 09:57 AM

I'm going from excited to get my engine put together to scared now

I HATE every single 2 to 3 up-shift on track so I usually try to keep it in 3rd by going faster :)

One for $550 just popped up on Mnet. Also check car-part.com

elesjuan 03-19-2010 01:27 AM

With the upcoming weekend and prospect for great weather this evening decided to finally drop the transmission and put in Andy's spare.

Pulling the plug and dumping the horrid looking black redline this little guy fell out:

http://jugrnot.com/IMG_6910.jpg

Thats an entire tooth! The transmission rattles when you shake it too. Can't wait to pop it open.

Started this little project at about 17:30 this evening and completed 21:30 for dinner with the new trans installed 99%. Still need fluid fill in the trans along with turret, then install shifter and put the one screw back in my center console.

Somehow most of the underside of my car is coated in a nice sheet of oil, grease, and sand. Yay for Kansas!

I've worked 53 hours this week, slept about an average of 5 hours per night and its turned me into a complete physical wreck. I'm way past exhausted.

Really seemed worse looking in the mirror of my bathroom and I should've taken a picture of my arms as they were completely black. Took a 45 minute shower and still don't have all the grease and grime removed and I use a really good degreaser soap. Oh and thank god for safety glasses. :eek4:

Fireindc 03-19-2010 06:54 AM

Haha, nice. I feel your pain. A was completely covered in grease after the clutch job i did on my car. Damn was it dirty, i guess 170k worth of road grime really kills it.

Me during said clutch job. Dont have any after shots but it was worse.

There's a reason I hung on to all my work shirts from when I worked in the machine shop.

Attachment 199245

This is at the beginning of day two of motor swap, when we were still clean. Shirts were so bad when we were done my wife wouldn't let them anywhere near the washing machine. Good thing I've got more of them...makes like easy sometimes.

Oh yeah, using GoJo on your face is FAIL.

Savington 03-19-2010 08:57 AM

i HATE clutch jobs under the car on jackstands.

HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HAET. HAIGHT.

If I am doing a clutch, plus ANYTHING else, I'll just pull the motor instead. It's another hour or so of work, but it is so much more pleasant.

timk 03-22-2010 04:37 AM

So yeah, my gearbox decided to start making this noise today:

I replace mine about 3 weeks ago, GOSpeed was nice enough to trade me a transmission for some 1.6 stuff I had. Thanks again!
Here's what mine looked like.

I heard a very faint ticking noise under acceleration, for a couple days. Then halfway through the gear it blew up. Mine had shucked two teeth, but I think it shucked one tooth a few weeks before.
