Just got valve job, tapping noise!?!?!

I just got a multi angle valve job done on my head, now I hear a decently loud tapping noise, seems like it's coming from the valves. Any ideas as the what this could be? How to fix/ adjust?

What year of motor?

is it lifter tick, or clanking noises?

iluvtruenos 06-28-2007 10:38 PM

Rod knock?

maybe one of more of the lifters got drained of oil while the head was apart and it might do this until it heats up one time or might go away in 20 seconds of running. Have you been driving it or did you just start it up and notice this?

350drft 06-29-2007 03:05 AM

I started it, and let it run for 5 mins. The noise did not change.

350drft 06-29-2007 03:05 AM

huster, it's a ticking noise, not a clanking.

Sounds like HLA tick. You should have replaced them all if you had the head apart...

hustler 06-29-2007 07:58 AM

there are millions of threads on m.net about fixing this. I recommend a little atf in the oil for about 200 miles before oil change.

iluvtruenos 06-29-2007 03:46 PM

Just beat the piss out of it. Floor to redline, that should shoot enough oil into the lifters to make them rise again

I fixed my lifter tick noise by running 5W50 Mobil 1 motor oil.

After rebuilding my head I had nasty lifter tick for about 200 miles... then it just went away and hasn't come back. It was a design flaw in the NA miatas, the oil passage in the lifters is too small. Oddly enough the KIA lifters for the same motor were correct and didn't have this problem. They are also cheaper. So, if you ever replace your lifters use the KIA Sephia 1.8L parts.
