Lengthening Gears on a Turbo 1.8

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,
So during my daily driving I find that 1st gear is completely useless, and when I'm doing some freeway runs I have to shift 2 or 3 times more than you should. Also I was with a friend (on the track... in mexico....) in his 370z and I stay neck and neck with him but I have to shift twice while he only does once, thus I start falling behind slightly. Also I run out of gears around 130ish with plenty of power and grip to go. I have a 5 speed torsen btw.

I assume the gearing is short because NA the miata's needed shorter gears to get the power down but now with about 240whp I just go through the gears too quickly.

Is there any way to lengthen the gears properly?!?

Thank you

The information i've found, but doesn't really help because I have no idea what I'm looking at...... Flyin' Miata : Technical info : Gearing calculator

Get a lower ratio differential, quaife gears or turbo II transmission.

Just a lower ratio rear gear will lengthen all the gears. 3.63 is available straight from mazda for $450 and its the lowest you can buy off the self for the stock diff.

Run some big rear tires!!!

+1 on 3.6 gears. Should give you much more topend and longer gears all around.

and pop that 5 speed with the quickness. and actually make his car slower unless he makes quite a bit more than 240 later

With the 5-speed? Bolt in a 3.9 with pumpkin and the associated speed sensor. Call it a day.

I have a 3.9 Torsen that I will trade for a 4.1 or 4.3 since I'm going to get 3.636 gears before I put it in anyway.

What did the 1.8 M's come with from the factory? 3.9 Torsens or 4.10 Torsens? And WTF is a pumpkin (other than a gourd-like squash from the genus Cucurbita)?

All NA8s are 4.10.

I'd suggest dissecting that calculator until you DO have an idea what you're looking at.

Then you'll be able to answer your own question better than anyone else will.
