Lengthening Gears on a Turbo 1.8
1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,
So during my daily driving I find that 1st gear is completely useless, and when I'm doing some freeway runs I have to shift 2 or 3 times more than you should. Also I was with a friend (on the track... in mexico....) in his 370z and I stay neck and neck with him but I have to shift twice while he only does once, thus I start falling behind slightly. Also I run out of gears around 130ish with plenty of power and grip to go. I have a 5 speed torsen btw. I assume the gearing is short because NA the miata's needed shorter gears to get the power down but now with about 240whp I just go through the gears too quickly. Is there any way to lengthen the gears properly?!? Thank you https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1376343310 The information i've found, but doesn't really help because I have no idea what I'm looking at...... Get a lower ratio differential, quaife gears or turbo II transmission.
Just a lower ratio rear gear will lengthen all the gears. 3.63 is available straight from mazda for $450 and its the lowest you can buy off the self for the stock diff.
Run some big rear tires!!!
+1 on 3.6 gears. Should give you much more topend and longer gears all around.
and pop that 5 speed with the quickness. and actually make his car slower unless he makes quite a bit more than 240 later
With the 5-speed? Bolt in a 3.9 with pumpkin and the associated speed sensor. Call it a day.
I have a 3.9 Torsen that I will trade for a 4.1 or 4.3 since I'm going to get 3.636 gears before I put it in anyway.
What did the 1.8 M's come with from the factory? 3.9 Torsens or 4.10 Torsens? And WTF is a pumpkin (other than a gourd-like squash from the genus Cucurbita)?
