I thinking about swapping the diff for an upgraded 94+ assembly or the one from the 86-91 rx7. Any suggestions on which one to choose? Also, how much would it typically be for everything I need? And just to make sure, everything i need is the diff. housing, driveshaft, and half shafts?

if you buy a completed assembly, you don't have to open it, or do anything, just bolt it up. but if you want to upgrade an open to a torsen lsd, then expect:

$400-800 for the torsen
$100-250 for the rx7 lsd
$50-150 setting backlash

my build:
$100 axles
$15 seals/clips
$25 driveshaft
$50 1.8 assembly
$225 rx7 lsd

minus:
$300 1.6 assembly/driveshaft/axles
$75 for the rx7 ring and pinon

M.net, I had multiple emails...at least 6, found a local SPEC guy come pick it up, wanted to build a comp lsd and didnt want to pull his first...wanted the rest of the stuff for spare parts.

when you say axles, are you talking about just the half shafts? or will i need the entire thing?

i call them axles, sorry.

Depending on the year; 94-95 1/2 had (2) halfshafts and (2) stubshafts, +95 1/2 have just (2) halfshafts.

ok, so if i get a 94-95 i need both. if i go with a 95+ both are basically built as one part. will all the years fit though? of course they'll get more expensive the newer i go, but if they all fit and i find a good deal why not?

yep. use car-part.com I've seen +96 shafts for $40-50 each w/abs rings.

Please don't tell me the halfshafts are different for ABS/non-ABS cars...

they are. see the side on the 96s that arent green...notice the geared ring...that's for the ABS sensors to read off of, when the car is at speed and it doesn't see them spin it enages ABS....

ones with non-abs, do not have the ridge to put your ABS gear on them....i tired, used a puller to pull them off the axles, when i went to put them on my 1.8L axles, there wasn't a ridge for them.

If you don't have ABS and end up with ABS axles, they'll work just the same, maybe you wanna puill the gears off to save about .5 lbs. per axles.

what i did (since i got non-abs) was pull the tops off my 1.6 halfshafts and and put them on the 1.8s. All you gotta do it pop open the metal clips, pull the boot down, clamp the axle in a vice, and use a BFH to pop them off the circlip. The are exactly the same size and share the same # of splines. The hardest part was putting mine back onto the axles over the circlip...for some reason it took all day.

see this diagram, you can see the boots pulled off from both sides, notice the splines, the just pop on and off.

ok, thats all great info. thanks. one last question, on that site you recommended, they list a drive shaft rear, and a drive shaft front. they also list an axle shaft. are the rear and front drive shafts the same, and i only need 1? or do i need both? and also, is what they refer to the axle shaft what we refer to as the half shaft?

search Axle Shaft for halfshafts.

but use Ebay for the driveshaft, seller on there always has them for $25 plus $10 to ship.
