Cool Lets talk TOPS

Alright, so the cleaning/scrubbing/waxing is underway, and that brings me that much closer to needing a new top since mine is cut in 2 places.

SO

I have done a bit of research, and right off hand ruled out an oem replacement top from mazda: its ******* expensive. That got me lurking on m.net in the soft tops section seeing what everyone is getting these days.

I have found this place, which is damn good prices imo:
http://www.convertibletopguys.com/cg...at.cgi?cat=746
as well as read many people mention other companies that sell pretty much the same thing. I checked ebay, found a couple that sound/look decent with good feedback from buyers:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...283908650&rd=1
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...263389087&rd=1
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...157851469&rd=1

From the looks of it the first company that I linked to has the best prices. Of course this is an aftermarket replacement, not oem, but fitment and everything else is advertised as great and oem quality.

I have 2 questions:
1) what place is the best to get from thats cheaper or cheapest, and good quality?
2) what style is proven to be good?
I have seen so many different opinions its ridiculous: some say vinyl window zip down, some say vinyl window non zip, some say glass zip, yada yada yada.

The stock one appears to be glass, non zip, with defroster. Should i just stick to that?

Any input is appreciated. thanx

Once I get a chance to put the lexan window on my HT and making sure it is water tight I will be selling off my soft top. It is a Duetto motors non removable glass top in black. I replaced it 2 years ago when I first bought the car. It is in minty fresh shape. The catch is that I wont be done for at least 2 weeks because I have to travel for work and I'm leaving tomorrow.

I don't know about price, but I've seen a few Robbins tops in person and they were NICE, even the vinyl ones looked much better than OEM. The new Moss catalog I got a few months back had a new sleek top on the cover, for less seams (more of an upmarket look). If I had to buy a top, that'd be the one.

I bought a Daveshouse, Tan cloth, non zip window, with defroster for 379.00. I think that was shipped. Not for sure now.
I just had it installed. I'll try to take a pic tommorrow. It looks nice.

A miata mechanic installed it for $100.00. If anyone in DFW wants his number PM me.

Robbin's 100%. I have seen some cheapo tops in person and no matter how good the owner of said top says how cool it is......its still garbage. Robbin's tops are expensive, but well made and well worth the money.

I have a new Robbin's top in my basement still waiting to go in. Its one of the jobs I'm not looking forward to doing on the car.

This is where I got mine from, Moss Motors. Great company, never had any issues with any orders.

My Robbins top fit like ****, and then tore at the seams because it was too small. The front seam is sewed on to where it's wavy. The mounting holes are all pre drilled, and I followed the install instructions to the T including the proper order for the rear bolts. Installing it was actually pretty easy and only took about 3 hours. It looks nice, but it is about 4" too short.

That is why my car has a hardtop, thankfully it never leaks. This also reminds me I need to pull that thing out and throw it away.

1point6 - You're the first person I've heard complain about a Robbins top. Considering the folks I've know over the years using them not only on Miatas but also MGs and Triumphs, I would figure that to be a testament more than a warning.

18psi - Check www.gomiata.com as well. They carry several tops and tend to be a little easier on the wallet than Moss.

Yea it is on ebay. It is a mom and pop shop that has a connection with a top company. They have a phone number where you can call them direct.
My girlfriend had bought a cheap top once. It didn't fit right. So I bought this one from them and it is nice.
I'm cheap and pick'ey.

I just recently replaced mine (about 3months ago) and had no idea what was on the car before but had a cracked rear window (vinyll) and some rips around the rear widow on the top. I wound up going with a top from Kwiktops. Once un-installing the old and re-installing the new I found out the old one was a Robbins top which fit nice. New one took a while to install since I've never done it before but came out perfect. Had a few waves behind the rear window when freshly installed but now is perfect.

Best part about the top is it has a glass rear window that can be zipped down but is NOT required to be unzipped to be able to put the top down. You see most will either no zip or require you to unzip in order to put the topdown. You need an extra $35 strap kit in order to set the top supports to clear the window but took an extra 20min to install and I don't regret it at all.

Cost around $330.00 shipped with the upgraded strap kit I was talking about above.
http://www.kwiktops.com/item--Miata-...top_90-97.html

Pics from right after install....again the waves I had issues with went away one the sun got to the vinyl and it settled.

Thanx alot guys. Now I have a shitload of options, and look like all have been proven to fit/work/good quality.

I will be placing the order most likely mid to late next week, when I get paid. Pictures of it installed to follow.

*edit- One more question: Did you guys go with the vinyl or the cloth?

I pretty much made up my mind to go with black as color, and glass for the rear window. Cloth seems to cost extra with each company, so im assuming its an upgrade or better quality. Any input on this?

Cloth is always going to be more expensive but I'm pretty sure it doesn't adjust as much to tempeture as the vinyl does. If its cold out the vinyl is stiff and harder to get to fold and stretch out; if its hot it's super easy to fold and some what flappy (mush). The cloth should be more consistant. Other than that the cloth is better looking but harder to keep up with.

Vinyl tops tear easily especially when they are cold. It happened to a car I was looking to buy.
