Little fun in our 253whp 91T (video)

What can I say, I had a set of tires I'd never actually DRIVE on, and a perfectly good parking lot... why not?

miataz 12-15-2007 08:42 PM

where u wearing a gas mask haha, those tires got raped

elesjuan 12-15-2007 08:44 PM

:bigtu:

Even N/A donuts are fun.

cjernigan 12-15-2007 09:12 PM

Awesome brodies.
Who's parking lot, cause they now it looks like they're lot is sponsored by audi with the rings.

Mine ;)

Sponsored by DIYAutoTune at a nice price per square foot....

cjernigan 12-15-2007 10:07 PM

I'm glad you use it all to the fullest extent. Atleast you get your moneys worth.

I try ;), and the guys and AutoFab Motorsports a couple doors down help out a good bit too. My rings are still pretty much ruling the lot though, nearly a month later. Hopefully the landlord doesn't come by...

Ben 12-15-2007 10:57 PM

LOL, just blame it on AutoFab. I'm pretty sure they did it. Friggin hooligans. ;)

Ben 12-15-2007 11:02 PM

Oh, I forgot, my "donut spot" is behind the Circuit City off Steve Reynolds. Haven't been up there in the turbo miata yet, but need to soon...

teknikscian 12-16-2007 02:21 AM

ha! brilliant

Saml01 12-16-2007 11:17 AM

Just donuts :(

I could do that in my car with 150 less hp. Take this thing out on the highway and lets see it run.

Btw. I like your mounting location for the mspnp, but its so uneventful. Have you guys thought of maybe incorporating some red LED's into it so the letters light up.

hustler 12-16-2007 11:44 AM

Donuts are irresponsible and unsafe. Think of all the wooden steering wheels and genuine mazda accessories you could purchase. I'm pretty sure the megasquirt upset the "balance" of your collector car.

Doppelgänger 12-16-2007 11:46 AM

Hey Jerry, if you niticed a few more darker sets up there recently.... i also had a set of tires to put in the grave lol. Go ask Thomas to watch the video... between the tires squeal and s/c whine.. it sounds something scary lol.

... i'm not sure if you are bad at sarcasm or just didn't know.. it does have lighting that lights up the red letters

Have you looked at one in the dark yet? We weren't overly intentional about it, but they do glow a bit....

I'll take a video request... what would be good, that won't get me in too much trouble ;)

As for donuts with n/a power, these cars do awesome donuts period, but n/a, you're not going to get close to this as you'll be stuck in 1st gear which doesn't get the tire temps up and doesn't produce anywhere near as much smoke. I was launching in 2nd from a stop at several points in that vid and immediately lighting them up :bigtu:.

Ben 12-16-2007 12:28 PM

My 96 (NA w/ torsenII) would do donuts, but not like that. Had to start in 1st, and could shift to 2nd when swinging about. Wouldn't make that kind of smoke either.

The PNP glows red in the dark.

I'm liking Sam's request. Maybe some on-ramps, speedo shot, driving shot, passing cars (not TOO fast but to give a good indication of acceleration). I-85 might make a nice setting.

Ben 12-16-2007 01:02 PM

lol, don't get the man in trouble. too much construction on 85. Local patrol and GSP is everywhere, as the speed limit was lowered and fines were doubled. I'm sure there will be no shortage of videos this spring, when AtlantaDragway and autox open back up.

FoundSoul 12-16-2007 01:14 PM

I may play around a bit if I can safely. I don't need any crazy tickets though you can imagine what bad insurance rates would do to me having to insure several shop cars ;). As Ben said spring isn't that far away. I'm thinking a good vid of Ben outrunning me down Atlanta Dragway would be nice, maybe some in car vid at Road A, AutoX vids. etc.

kotomile 12-16-2007 02:25 PM

No man I don't want you to get into trouble. I was thinking on ramps because you're pretty much expected to accelerate up them, but I didn't know about the construction on 85, I'm about 2.5 hours away lol.

Spring will be a good time, especially if we get the spring dyno meet ironed out :bigtu:

budget racer 12-16-2007 02:33 PM

 Jerry.......time for some new tires???

Are you starting in 3rd? :)
We definately need to hit up the dragway though!

I disagree...

He had to quit because the car ran out of gas..

FoundSoul 12-16-2007 04:13 PM

What are you disagreeing with?

johndoe 12-16-2007 04:27 PM

He probably dissagreed with some part of your quote, your guess as to which part... He's just a modest man is all.:inout:

Sorry I thought I trimmed your quote down about the N/A part. Or maybe I thought the video would have made my post obvious. :squint:

I disagree with an N/A car not able to make that kind of smoke. True that you can't use second gear, and about another 80 or 90 wheel horsepower makes a huge difference in donuts..

FoundSoul 12-16-2007 06:45 PM

The statement was mostly about 2nd gear, which will spin the wheels much faster, putting much more heat into them and making much more smoke.... But sure, 1st gear will make some good smoke and the car will do that great n/a. But I don't think the example video linked above has much on the total smoke blackout we had going on. I had to stop a couple times as I couldn't tell how close I was to the buildings any more, and even though I was pretty sure I was in the clear there was no way to know for sure but to stop and roll out of the cloud.

I wonder if I could rip 3rd gear loose from a stop, in donut stance... The clutch will start to complain eventually. I do still have the matching pair of tires to burn... I'm not going to drive on them.

So sure, no doubt 1st gear will smoke, 2nd = more wheelspeed = more heat more smoke. Tires will play a role too, some smoke more than others....

elesjuan 12-16-2007 07:00 PM

:D

If you've got a big enough parking lot try a rolling start. Stock clutch can't take a 1-2 shift with power, so we found if you start driving in second around a circle, upset the balance a bit and stab the throttle. Works wonders for us. :D

How would I know it glows if I never seen one first hand, and the brief glimpse of it in the video doesnt show it glowing either.

FoundSoul 12-16-2007 07:02 PM

This is a Spec Stage 3, 4-puck. It hangs pretty good though it felt a little weak for a few minutes after that little exhibition, until the fluid cooled off I'm guessing ;).

I would if you would have used me as a beta test for a pnp ;)

Take a pic of one powered up whenever you have time.

cjernigan 12-16-2007 07:31 PM

Anyone not showing their MS off is bogus. Cut a hole in the shield and carpet, replace with lexan. That would be nice. I wouldn't do it but it would be pretty damn cool. The extension harness is better.
I probably wouldn't show mine off if i had one really, afraid of it being stolen.

 Four puck?? Whered you get that? Aside from beating on it like that, how does that clutch hold? I bought the Stage 3 six-puck which obviously holds N/A great.

FoundSoul 12-17-2007 12:02 AM

It's been great so far... I've got a Spec Stage-3 6-puck in my MR2 and 4-puck in the Miata, both get some good 'exercise' though the Miata puts alot more to the ground at this point. It's fairly streetable though it will chatter a bit if you let it, but it's all business when needed. I think it's about right for this car. The 6 puck in the MR2 doesn't have quite the tendency to chatter, it will but not quite as bad. They'll build it in a 6-puck too if you want.

Doppelgänger 12-17-2007 12:15 AM

i've also got a 4-puck ACT..... and this is after having a 3-puck Exedy lol. Both were used for DD and had little problems (as long as you don't use a Exedy clutch with a Fidanza flywheel).

elesjuan 12-17-2007 01:18 AM

Dang I didn't know you could get the SPEC In 4 puck. Ohwell. The 6 puck seems fine so far, but I noticed its REAL grabby when you start to engage it. Other than that pedal feel seems stock to me, but its been a couple years since I've driven a true stock clutched miata. Still doesn't have anything pedal feel to the stupid speed6. My left leg is larger than my right just from driving that car I swear. Its super soft on the floor for about 1/3 travel then gets really heavy and just wants to fly out. Hardest clutch I've driven, but it clamps and thats what I care about. :D

what was the issue?

mr_mazda329 12-17-2007 10:20 AM

I've known a few Exedy clutches to fail prematurely. My freinds at CoolCatRacing know all about that because they have replaced a couple and was only used for Street with some AutoX

Doppelgänger 12-17-2007 10:34 AM

^^To both the replies above.

Exedy failed in under a year with no abnormal driving conditions. Started slipping, got to a point where i couldn't go into boost within a month. Got to taking things apart and turns out that the flywheel warped. So i have a fidanza flywheel that warped down in less then a year. (still sittining in the closet with a new fiction surface if anyone wants to make an offer). CCR is where i got the clutch and flywheel in the 1st place. So i dunno if the material that Exedy uses gets particularly hot or what.

Now im back to a stock flywheel (yuck) and ACT 4-puck clutch.

Sorry for the thread jack!

ray_sir_6 12-17-2007 02:03 PM

I did that at MSR on their "G-pad".

join the club. I did it at 94whp...lol.

elesjuan 12-17-2007 02:47 PM

Holy crap! We've put over 70k of abuse on an Exedy and it still holds 160rwhp!

I lost count of the 7000rpm clutch dumps, both N/A and S/C!
