Lower engine cover repair?

Gents,

I was unable to safely avoid a piece of bouncing debris on track. It caused a fist-sized area of cracks in my lower engine cover. What's the best glue to make the repair? I was actually thinking of using a soldering iron.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have you considered one of these?

I know of no adhesive that will work. Ethylene polymers don't glue well. I'd try SNS or a local part out house for a used cover.

I'm inside six days before leaving for my next event, so a repair is necessary.

Can you use a patch/thin strip pop rivetted in place, maybe some gunk if you want it sealed too? You might have to use longer pop rivets and washers to spread the load.

Are you talking about the lower timing cover? It’s possible to run without it if you need to order a replacement

did you check the link I posted? It would be getting delivered tomorrow if you ordered it right away. It's better than any adhesive

I used a soldering iron and some scrap plastic I had from an old engine tray that I had cut up when I got the Kraftwerks Rotrex kit years ago. I used the scrap plastic like solder and did both sides. I did the work in the garage, and took this picture out in the sun. It looked like shit, so I went over the the whole repair with a wider soldering iron blade. Seems strong enough, but I probably could have gotten by without doing anything given the current temps.

Thanks for the inputs.

That will probably work, but if it were me (and it was a time ago) I would still reinforce it with a few thin strips of plastic or aluminium bolted or pop rivetted across the join.

I thought you were talking about something else.

Yeah I think we all assumed he meant the lower timing cover and not the splash shield.
