MBSP, Oil Pans, etc
 

Trying to figure out what is involved in this MBSP thing. Looking to see which parts are what. Did some digging (Also, see how much you save with mazdacomp? Awesome, eh?)

Ok, some part numbers:

2000 miata:

So, it looks like the MSM miata oil pan is super pricey, as cool as it is to have an oil return built in, it's not manyhundreddollarscool.

Second: There is a part number difference between braces on windage trays. So I guess it DOES do something. :-) The oil pans are different, too, but the same cost.

A picture would be worth a thousand words here. For $50 it would be nice to have the tray. This "will it seal oil" thing I have a feeling can be worked out. Pat mentions Stealth has done this, perhaps he can shed some light.

My contribution:

Not posting sources but my previous research showed the MBSP can be found on the 01+ miata and the 95-97 Kia Sephia. Turns out kia used the BP1.8 for 3 years before developing their own engines. The kia long block has all the same parts as a 94-97 miata motor with the exception being the MBSP, pickup tube, and oil pan.

I bought a 82K mile 96 kia BP1.8 a while back and can confirm the oil pan definitely wont' fit a miata. It's a front sump vs. the miatas rear sump. However research shows the stock miata oil pan from 94-00 will interfere with the MBSP. Most buy the 01+ miata oil pan as it is designed to fit in a miata and clear the MBSP found stock on all 01-05 miatas. However, I've also read the stock miata oil pan can be "clearanced" by grinding some metal off to gain the clearance. However, it's speculated this could cause the stock Oil pan to leak as you are grinding away part of the pan where it meets and seals to the block. MY speculation is perhaps the MBSP could be ground a bit to clear the stock miata oil pan.

I don't have pictures of the pan or MBSP, but would be willing to take some if you need. Just have to get over to where the car and parts are being stored.

But you basically have all the info you need as Ben said. It's juts the MBSP, the oil pan that supports it, and the correct pickup tube, as they are definitely different between the 2 generations.
From MiataRoadster.coms website: "If you have a 94-00 oil pan, due to the added thickness of the MBSP being sandwiched between the block and oil pan, you'll have to have us or your machine shop:

* fly-cut the rim of the oil pan to maintain proper alignment with transmission bolts
* shorten the ends of ARP main-cap-to-block studs (available below) so the tops of the studs clear the underside of the MBSP."

Your stock pickup tube/strainer/hardware will work fine. fits perfect. all you need is the oil pan for the 01+ miata, the MBSP from the 01+ miata, wich is also the windage tray. 01 MBSP and windage tray are the same part, it is one piece. you will also need the bolts that attach it to the main caps, thats it.

post a WTB ad on Miata.net. thats how I got mine for about $100 shipped, in about a week.

PS and BTW if you dont get one I wont consider it a deal breaker, I only bought it because my stock windage tray was cracked, and I got a good deal.

Ooo - awfully jealous of the MSM oil pan! Seems very useful to have all those holes.

So there's holes in the windage tray which hold it to the caps? That's the part I'm confused about, how does it DO any good? When I saw trimming the studs in that article you quoted, I thought perhaps it didn't connect at all, somewhat defeating the purpose!

Yes, the MSM pan is nice! I'm going to be using an oil drain kit that bolts directly to the pan like the OEM line does. I'll have to block off the other side though, don't need anything else draining into it at the moment. May consider routing the catch can line in there later.

I'll get pictures for you. I thought the same way you did, and as soon as I saw it taken apart, it all made sense.

When you look at the caps, they have two levels, the cap bolts to the block via the holes on the outside portion of the cap, which is lower, and the MBSP connects on the high portion of the cap and then bolts between the pan and the block via the normal pan bolts.

Ok, makes sense. I thought I remembered holes there, but wasn't sure if my mind was supplying details I only wished were true.

Pics would be appreciated.

BTW: I've heard since the oil catch cans are often largely water vapor, you're better off NOT reclaiming that oil, or at least doing it manually after you verify it's something you want in your motor. Something to think about.

What's the 2nd oil return for (the metal pipe) ? Oil return from the turbo is on the other side of the pan.
