confused, picture is of Brad's hood laid against his big ass TV. Link is of a different one.....

duh i can't read....if i wasn't so cheap I'd get it.

paul 11-26-2007 02:01 PM

thats the pic the guy sent me, Brad Hiddeman

The hood is primer grey and here is a picture.

Ben 11-26-2007 02:05 PM

The pic on the CL ad is for an NB. He's just showing "stock" photos.

If I were in that area, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat, especially after seeing whaaamx5's in person.

fourwhls 11-26-2007 02:09 PM

That's my old hood. I guess Brad didn't want to deal with the modification that would need to be made either.

Braineack 11-26-2007 02:09 PM

well shit. I didn't know brad was selling it. i was supposed to help him install it this weekend and forgot.

RotorNutFD3S 11-26-2007 02:11 PM

What exactly has to be done to make the hood work properly anyway?

Ben 11-26-2007 02:12 PM

WTF would Brad post it on CL instead and not here first? :slap:

You need to clearance the area above the timing belt cover, especially so with 90-93 chassis with 1.8 motors. It *should* drop into a 90-93 with stock motor, but I believe Brad is running a 1.6 so... :dunno:

whaaamx5 clearanced his to fit, his (94 or 95) with 1.8 motor and it looks and fits fine.

fourwhls 11-26-2007 02:13 PM

The hood "should" work with a 1.6. It hits the front of the valve cover on a 1.8.

In order to use it on a 1.8, you would have to cut a good chunk of the vent area. More cutting than I was willing to deal with.

Braineack 11-26-2007 02:17 PM

we just need to trim a bit off it. Brad's moving and doesnt have a place to store it anymore really. I was going to help him this weekend and totally forgot, I think he put on CL to try to unload it really fast before his lease ends.

I'm now trying to convince him to keep it here in my office, or in my garage until we can get 'er done.

RotorNutFD3S 11-26-2007 02:18 PM

Ah. Yeah, I don't want to do any cutting on anything either.

Braineack 11-26-2007 02:20 PM

yeah they molded it so the "extractors" that scavenge, sit too low and hit the valve cover, you need to take about 1" off the entire edge to clear the valve cover. I have an air cutting wheel tool, brad = dremel.

paul 11-26-2007 02:23 PM

and for those of us with 99 motors in NA body, can we expect more issues due to the larger intake mani?

Ben 11-26-2007 02:23 PM

The "cutting" shouldn't be anything more than some simple grinding and sanding. The hood is going to need some paint prep anyway probably.

While we're on a hood subject, what is a stock Mazda NA hood worth? I have an extra in good shape, complete with greddy carb sticker affixed to the underside.

When I was looking around at them to make a hood like your project hood, I saw them range from $100 to $250ish depending on condition. However, I did find one for $50 because it had a few hail dings in it.
Oh, and the Greddy sticker adds $50 to the value by default. lol

Braineack 12-03-2007 09:52 AM

we got it cut. sanded and it's ready for paint.

fwiw, those cuts were before fine trimming and sanding, so don't front homie.

Looks pretty damn good. So who is keeping the hood?

levnubhin 12-03-2007 10:10 AM

With how far back over the v-cover that opening is are you concerned about water gettin into the spark plugs? How would that fair with exposed cams?

I am considering building some little "blocker" to seal up that area above the spark plugs.

we made sure to cut the least amount possible. I wouldn't be too concerned about water, only when parked during a downpour, typically when we don't leave the miata out.

here are two others cut to show the difference:

what's rediculous is how erebuni got away with selling something that doesn't come close to fitting without cutting.

Zabac 12-03-2007 10:50 AM

glad to see you guys got it done and he didnt get rid of it
you guys did a great job, looks good, now get the thing painted

what is worse to cut CF or fiberglass? when i gut the CF i did NOT have to sand or refinish anything, it cut realy smooth, how did the fiberglass do...? im curious, i want to experment with some stuff, just dont have the time yet

Braineack 12-03-2007 11:07 AM

both probably easy enough to cut, it cut like butter with my air rotary tool. some of the edges weren't smooth because the wheel i sued was thicker, but it sanded down like clay, very easy to work with.

Zabac 12-03-2007 11:09 AM

cool, thanks for the info, i never cut fiberglass before

rappadan 12-03-2007 07:46 PM

man, mine looks like shit compared to everyone elses. Its all good all i did was scuff it up and paint it. Someone else did all the cutting before i got it.

AEROCATCH Hood pins FTW!!!!!!!!!!!

XxGoKoUxX 12-03-2007 11:47 PM

if it fits a direct fit for the 1.6L miata i'm ordering it by this weekend if you guys know and trust the guy selling it :)

Braineack 12-04-2007 08:57 AM

obvious it's not a direct fit....three examples above.

Ben 12-04-2007 10:31 AM

Dan, don't sweat it bro. Yours looks better than mine. :)

i thought ben said it would drop into a 90-93 stock motor

Braineack 12-04-2007 07:45 PM

that's my motor in the pics. it's a stock 1.6 with stock motor mounts. rappandan's is a 1.6l with mmr motor mounts, actually lower than stock.
...dunno what to tell you.

Ben 12-04-2007 08:13 PM

well it's supposed to fit a 1.6, but uhm, :dunno:

XxGoKoUxX 12-05-2007 12:12 AM

lawl.... i just forgot i spent 400$ on the ACT clutch... i can't buy it :'(

Eunos_roadsterna6ce 12-05-2007 12:57 AM

a sponsor from clubroadster.net called Autokonexion got a pretty cool hood too. i saw it at D1 grand prix in irwindale california. it was a show car.

yuk i hate louvers, why cant it just be an extraction hood. i don't even see where the louvers will do anything.

im simply going to ducttape this onto a stock hood:

Ben 12-05-2007 09:26 AM

that hood would have been awesome if he hadn't gone all club roadster with the shark gills. it's too bad he didn't ask for design input from people who aren't complete retards.

Newbsauce 12-05-2007 09:38 AM

Yeah I like how he accepted community input, I do not like how he only accepted input from CR.net fanboys.

Ben 12-05-2007 09:42 AM

and then he went off on emilio, when emilio asked him if the shark gills could be removed or relocated.

Braineack 12-05-2007 09:47 AM

you guys are idiots. you gotta do something to cool your cams. opening up gills over a high pressure zone is the best way!

Newbsauce 12-05-2007 09:48 AM

Haha could always fiberglass the gills shut ;) Thats just a bit more effort then I'm willing to spend on it though. IMO the only car that looks good w/ those type of "gills" are the s2ks.

Wait wait, I've got it. Fish have gills right (a)? Fish use the gills to breathe underwater! Therefore if a car has gills it can certainly breathe underwater!

Ben 12-05-2007 09:53 AM

It's not worth the $$ if you have to close the gills. If you wanted to do work, you could just graft in your own extractor.

+1 BUT, I'd be more willing to "accept" the gills if he had some "proof" that they work to exhaust heat rather than drawn in low pressure air from the top of the hood. If they were at least proven to be functional, they'd be easier to accept, but the retard won't even so a simple string test.

No, no, they are perfectly placed to cool a DEI setup. Come on now.

Eunos_roadsterna6ce 12-05-2007 03:23 PM

what if your mani is super hot and it rains...wouldn't it be possible that it can crack your mani?
