That bronze looks really good.

I just wish that I could get an update on my car. ;(

Front is already "rolled" from the factory. Rear has a big lip like the NA. For the sake of STR (very popular autocross class), we want to see if a 245/40 will fit. STR allows a fender roll but not liner removal, so we think it might be possible. It's a tall, heavy tire so street and track cars with stock-ish power won't want it. 235/40 is plenty of tire. Even though the 17x9 235/40/17 is only 1.3 lbs heavier than the stock 17x7 205/45, you can feel the extra tire drag.

Alright, lemme go put on my gloves so I can go touch the poop. I wonder what Mnet has to say about GRM's A/B testing that just came out last week...

JP, not doubting the ND may have some advantages over the NC. Just thought the comparison article was disappointing as it was a mix of a press car and a 6 year old class spec modified car. Not an AX guy, was more interested in a comparison test. Hope somebody does one, doubt Mazda will support it with two new vehicles.
Welp, the test is not valid because Mazda doesn't have a time machine. At least his sig provides some insight to how his mind works: "I don't care what you say, my anecdotal evidence agrees with my reality "

I've gotta believe that 15's would still be the hot ticket for autox. I know it doesn't look right, but it's GOT to perform better, hasn't it?

The ND's 2nd gear is already well short of 60mph, going to a 23" tire will just be more punishing.

e: lol
The NCs will still be just as good as they ever were. The ND is just better.
At autocross. It's important to maintain perspective.

A lot of the world gives zero f's about autocross.

The NC has more front-bias in the braking and sloppier handling due to the springs. Sways are just a bandaid fix. Hell, the ND has more rear-biased brakes to boot, thanks to the reduction in front size.

They basically optimized the car for autocross, so why is anyone shocked it's better FOR AUTOCROSS.

I'd love to see an NC cup car go up against an ND cup car. The NC is optimized for higher speeds, has a stiffer chassis, and more top-end power.
u mad~~~~ (note: this is the same guy who private messaged me and told me to fly to LA so that he can beat me up and he's totally 6'2 and 240lbs of PURE MUSCLE)

Gearing is a big deal for autocross. I had along conversation with Brian Goodwin yesterday, who lives at the bleeding edge of autocross development. We both noticed the car requires a 2-3 upshift on fast courses so decided to tweak the offset of the 17x9 so we could fit the 245/40 STR killer tires. That should give the car a few precious mph in 2nd, while improving contact patch to weight ratio.

While I'm on the subject, fit tests are done. 245/40/17 RE71-R/Rival-S will fit our 17x9 6UL on the ND with a rear fender roll and max front camber. No contact in rear, minor liner contact in front and full bump/full lock. I think the ND, with all the power potential it has with just a reflash and bolts ons, plus the huge gain in tires size over the NB, will seriously challenge the S2000's at the national level.

Now? MTnet is buggy when it comes to inline images.

I don't think anyone addressed you about the loud idle so for ***** and gigs since I work in calibration:

99% sure that is SJC in affect, aka cold catalyst warm up state. Basically during a cold start the vehicle is calibrated to dump more fuel in and run at a very retarded spark timing (among some other changes) in order to get the catalysts to "lite off" as quick as possible. This is because a catalyst doesn't really work below 400C or so, and thus most of the emissions a car puts out during an FTP cert trace is during those first few seconds or minute.

The FRS/BRZ is also very loud in this mode.

I drove a club yesterday. First thing I noticed was that on start up the exhaust/cat was really loud with the door open. After about a minute the idle changed and it was quite. The top comes down easily with one hand, if you do it too slow you have to reach back and lock in place by hand. The seats have a nice lower shape like a Elise seat and the back is similar to the 99-up seat. It has one adjuster that lifts the front thigh section up to bucket the seat more. The glovebox is ala S2000. Thought I would really hate the big info center but once I was driving I never even noticed it. You have to unlock the doors to open the gas lid like a G35. I almost stalled it leaving the parking spot, the flywheel is very light, rev matches perfect. Feels like a 1.6 with a 10lbs fly.

Once out of the parking lot the extra torque was immediately noticeably. Down low it feels like a lot bigger motor than it is. The exhaust note is similar to a very high mileage NA stock exhaust. The steering is very light, like first couple of turns I had to make lots of corrections to the wheel due to oversteering it. It rides really nice but I still noticed some cowl shake on filled in pothole roads similar to an NA/NB. Ripping through some corners I never noticed the body roll like a lot of the reviewers have stated, not really a big deal IMHO. It seems more stable in corner entry, like it doesn't have to take a set, just ready to be pushed harder however fast you enter a corner. The rear comes out really smooth and you can hold a slip angle very easily. The gearbox is really nice, gates are spaced normally unlike the 99-05 6spd and the engagement notches in like it should. Its still not better than a fresh bushinged 5spd, but very close. It was able to slightly accelerate up a decent hill at 45 in 6th. I never once looked at the tach, it has so much mid range pull that I could just shift whenever and stay in the power. It was lugging at 1500rpm at 35 in 6th.2

I'm 5'10" and seemed to have about 2" of head room on the second to last click back of the seat. Once they break in I bet you could get another 1". The soft top was really well made with a hard noise blocker from the front running about a foot back that should keep the top from buffeting when it gets stretched out and your on the highway. Had a couple of built in rainwells which is nice. The cup holders are better placed for shifting and nothing seems to get in your way. Felt a lot like a modern NA with lots of low end grunt. Really didn't feel like I needed anything that was added to the Club over the sport. The added aero looked cheap, like off ebay. I wonder if you could get the sport with an LSD? Not really a fan of the soul red, but that's subjective. Hoping they have more color options for 2017 as most of the ones this year are pretty boring. If your a NA/NB fan and never really liked the NC, your in for a treat with this car. Defiantly suggest you go drive one on a good 15-20 minute loop.

The fast idle period on cold start is addressed in the owners manual. Specifically states it's dialed that way to heat the first cat quicker so they can use a header for more power. Go Mazda!
Just around the block. Going to a Mazda ride and drive on Tuesday where I'll get to flog a new Miata and a BRZ back to back, should be fun.

I'm fully aware that it's the best Miata ever powerwise, blah blah. Awesome car, and I do want one. It's still pretty pathetic specific output for a sports car in this day and age.

That gets an honest 37mpg hwy. It is very much a world class powertrain.
