My new clutch

About 800 miles later. Look hard and you'll see an assortment of clutch disk springs trapped under the pp springs. No wonder I couldn't shift gears. This was a Spec disk with new copper ceramic pads installed (they're still there) after the kevlar wore out in just 5k miles. Looks like the rivets that hold the sprung center to the friction outer pulled through. I've had rotten luck with Spec.

:td: Very bad! I hope that spec warranties the clutch, and doesn't blame the failure on abuse.

Good luck.

m2cupcar 12-02-2006 04:13 PM

I tried contacting them via voicemail and email when the kevlar pads wore out without any luck, so I gave up. This is the second time this spec disk has failed me- I've learned my lesson now.

God Damnnnnnnn! I dont even think my mom could mess a clutch up that bad.

miatamania 12-02-2006 04:27 PM

what will you next clutch be...my friends spec in his charged Camaro sucked...and now this one...kinda like...eh.

Braineack 12-02-2006 04:31 PM

Ok, I think we should boycott Spec here.

F20turbo 12-02-2006 04:39 PM

I have a SPEC story too. I used a sprung 4 puck much like the one you have. Its not that the clutch springs came apart, but the copper pads...they basically just broke off and the clutch would slip terribly when I would go for anything over 15psi. SPEC is junk.

m2cupcar 12-02-2006 04:46 PM

Yeah, I don't have ANY confidence in them. They did sponsor a car I raced and that clutch worked fine- but we're talking a hundred horsepower or so on a road course. This is different.

I'm tempted to just get an ACT disk since I've got an ACT pp. I did notice that there looks to be a single 6 puck hipo sprung disk that's being sold by about ten different manufacturers. Clutchnet sells it for $170, yet on ebay you can get what looks to be the exact same thing in a kit with everything for the same price.

ACTs discs can be had for cheap. try prostreetonline.com

Am I the only person running a Spec with some success?

Mach929 12-02-2006 05:13 PM

i ended up with an act this time around again. I was going to give RPS a shot but they discontinued the miata clutch. I had an act in my eclipse and loved it but some miata people complained about theirs squealing. However nobody complained about them failing so i went with them again, it's been fine for the couple hundred miles i have on it. I like it a lot

miatamania 12-02-2006 05:37 PM

which ACT discs are you guys running? the street disc is rated to 200 tq...is that right, will it actually hold it?

Kelly 12-02-2006 05:38 PM

Clutchnet has never failed me in any of the cars I have used them in

I can't find where they list torque limits on the site.

I was about a week away from ordering a SPEC Stage II, now I'm back to searching, it seems.

jayc72 12-02-2006 05:58 PM

I've got a spec stage II and haven't had any trouble with it yet. Beat the shit out of it autocrossing and so far so good.

jayc72 12-02-2006 05:59 PM

Looking at the pictures, my disk looks totally different.

His isn't a stage II, the stage II is a full disk, not a puck clutch.

sorry, thats what I meant w/ the HD PP, been watching football and not paying a whole lot of attention...but it will hold that much? my friend had an ACT in his GSX and never had any problems...I just need to do this right the first time x.X

jayc72 12-02-2006 06:20 PM

Isn't the ACT street disk the just an OEM disk?
