My radiator fans quit!

So I'm getting off the freeway and I'm thinking wtf? My engine is getting hot! So I checked the fans by plugging them to power and they both work. Then I checked all my fuses for the entire car and they're all good. Then I checked my fan relay by unplugging my horn relay and using my fan relay in place of it. The horn works so the relay appears to be ok.

For those of you that don't know, the horn relay and the radiator fan relay are the same part. :)

Then I checked all my wiring for my megasquirt and oem ecu. All appears to be well and fine.

So WTF!!! They were working fine yesterday!!! :vash:

Bad coolant sensor?

Braineack 01-26-2010 10:16 PM

what's controlling the fans? ms or your thermoswitch?

Cookie Monster 01-26-2010 10:23 PM

Not MS when it happened. I did not have the ms hooked up to that, the oem ecu was handling that at the time. But now I have both ecu's hooked up hoping it would change something but nada.

So I would guess thermoswitch??? I don't know what that is right now, but I've heard of it before lol.

There's two thermosensors in the car. One in the front of the motor thermostat housing (on the top - make sure the wire isn't broken going to it), and the other one is behind and underneath the coil pack on the rear of the motor.

If you have MS it shouldn`t matter if that wires connected should it? Cause im running MS and its been disconnected and my fans always go on when needed.

+1 on the thermoswitches. had to replace one last year because it failed.

Cookie Monster 01-27-2010 06:47 PM

Is there a way to tell what I need to replace? I think one goes to the gauge and the other is for the ecu. I'm guessing I need the ecu coolant sending unit as it's called at the parts store.

The sensor on the thermostat housing controls the fan, remove the connector and ground it ,the left (Drivers side) fan should run.

Cookie Monster 01-27-2010 09:13 PM

Yeah, it looks like it was the switch or whatever you want to call it. I have a new one on now. I will know for sure if that was it tomorrow.

mx-p5 02-11-2010 10:49 AM

Get the new switch from the local dealer or auto parts store?

I have a new thermostat to go in mine as maintainance but i'm having teh same problem with my fans. Figure i'll do the thermoswitch while i'm doing the thermostat as well as splicing a new thermoswitch plug in as the old one is only held by one thread of metal of the orig. very thing wiring already

They work and comeon with the A/C but not by themselves as the motor needs.

gospeed81 02-11-2010 10:52 AM

Should've fired them before they had the chance to quit.

mx-p5 02-11-2010 11:01 AM

mine just walked out, no warning or nothing. . . . . kinda hard to fire someone who didn't give any signs of leaving
