It's best to install a wiring harness w/relay so the ballast have power all the time and the relay is would be hooked into the 12v source on your stock headlight socket/wire so that when you flip the switch i kicks the relay on which allows the constant power to the ballast to kick on.
The easy way is to plug everything together and hook the ground to the ground on the socket and power to the 12v source on the socket when on low beams. Direct plug-n-play; downside is the stock harness maynot like this (find that rare though mine works just fine) but since there is no constant voltage the car needs to be started before your headlight are turned on.
*since the HID ballast need a constant 12v in order to work it's unlike the stock bulbs that would just dim as voltage dropped. The ballast either has the correct voltage and is ON or doesn't have enough and is OFF. Basicly like a light switch instead of a dimmer. If you turn the headlight on before the car is started usally just one HID comes on (most of the time) and sometimes both come on (rarely). If your lucky and both come on as soon as you start the car and the starter draws voltage & current the ballast will no longer have the correct power and will shut off and then back on when the starters done and voltage is back up. This usally cause only one light to come one.
*so best bet is turning them on after the car is started if wired directly with out a relay.

EDIT: Also, the halogen hi beam is not going to be where it should be, in the center of the lens. I'm not sure how good the highbeam would be with the bulb offset like that. I think they are designed for states which require a hi beam to pass inspection, not for a useable high beam. Regardless I think the HID low beam would be brighter than the high beam anyway.

Our bulbs are the best solution, we implement a small H3c sized halogen bulb along side the regular
HID capsule. This gives you a halogen hi-beam just like factory. It works instantaneously, just like
the car was designed for, and is laser aligned to where the hotspot for a high beam would be in your
regular stock bulbs. So the low and the high beams are in the exactly correct place inside the reflector.

I'm waiting for the definitive HID headlight FAQ. I can't wait to be able to see at night! Please keep this thread going until a good set of recent part #'s and a working legal set of HID's is found. I can't wait to smash the shitty stock ones.
FWIW a guy at my shop swares by the ebay HID kits. He has had a set in each of his 3 cars and he hasn't had a problem with them at all. I think his cost $120 though.

I wonder what would last longer, the chinese halogen bulb or the chinese mechanism.

That, whats been shown in this thread seems to be a better alternative for good lighting than the moss kit, while mean and sleek looking, costs way too much IMO. I think for the price they should include Hella lamps that are made for HIDs, and include all the HID hardware. then id be all over it.
obviously HID kits are cheap enough now that they could do it

The ching chong HID kit was waiting for me when I got home. Gotta give UPS credit for this: China to US in 2 days for $30.
Don't have the housings yet, but I went ahead and plugged one in, just to see it work. HOLLY **** that thing is WHITE and BRIGHT. Amazing. It makes halogen light look like **** water in the toilet.
Also, it appears that the miata turns the low beams off when hi beams are activated. Sucks. If it weren't for that, it would be PNP. So to keep the low beams on, I'll need to add a relay, or possibly jump the hi and low relay coils with a diode. No biggie.
