NA Miata Splitter - Done Dirt Cheap!

Hey guys I made this video after a lot of people requested it who follow Origins Garage on social media. Thought it may help some of you who want a good head start on making your own splitter for an NA.

I'm not an engineer, just looking to help those looking for a push in the right direction.

Is that connected to the bumper skin....

Sure is, I cover that in the video and explain why I'm testing it this way. You could easily relocate to the bumper support beam by moving the top mounting points.

It's a Miata, not a ferrari. This will be a good stress test and i can move the upper mounting points in about 3 minutes if I so choose.

Probably a good idea, or they'll remove themselves in the same amount of time.

It looks nice, but it'll rip the mounts out of the bumper.

I'm going to test it, there's lots who run their upper mounts into the skins with good success. I may use a piece of aluminum on the backside mounting point and run a longer bolt through so that any pressure is more evenly distributed.

Or I'll move them to the bumper beam. Again, I'm experimenting and it's easily switchable. This bumper passes the 10ft test but it's no beauty queen.

Steel cable is usually the preferred support since it can collapse upward if you scrape something. It's not as pretty as turnbuckles, but it's really cheap and durable. Turnbuckles can mess stuff up if you try to compress them into plastic.

Having a video with a template/measurements is a nice idea though. Maybe I'll finally get around to starting mine.

edit - Not trying to beat a dead horse on the bash train. Just think it's worth noting some design issues for people's future builds

Yeah I already know i'll be avoiding those like the plague, but that's nothing new. Glad the template measurements help, that will def be the biggest time saver for you guys.

I doubt you'll make it to the test site like this.....Have you driven it? Litmus test for for the front aero is to be able to stand on the splitter

OGWar 04-03-2017 12:37 PM

FYI for those doubting I'd make it down the road, car has seen 120+ mph on dozens of pulls and beating the piss out of the car. Splitter is still rock solid.

Stand on it?

stepped on it with the full weight of my body a few times in my tiny ass garage on accident. Didn't budge.

Wow, the bumper skin didn't move at all? That's great, we probably no longer need updates about this.

I only weigh 155, so take that fwiw. And a follow-up to those saying they'd rip out of the bumper skin 3 minutes down the road def deserved a follow-up.
