Default NA to NB alternator differences?

Does anyone know the differences between a 94-97 alternator and a 01-05 alternator? I ask this because my battery got overcharged and imploded, trying to figure out what caused that.

Im using an 01 block in my 97 with a 99-00 head, I kept the 01 alternator on the block because it had lower mileage than my alternator off my 97 block.

I know the plugs are the same and the position on the ground as well, but Im wondering if the regulator is different in anyway? I didn't think it would be because NB's use similiar batteries as an NA.

The NB alternator needs an external voltage regulator to charge properly. You will want to stay with an NA alternator, or build a voltage regulation circuit like what we show with the DIYPNPs.

Any chance of getting pics?

The battery I was using is a XS power s680, its about 10lbs lighter than the lawnmower batteries we usually use.

Here it is in the trunk:

The way this happened was.....

I just got the car running the day before, ran fine but the battery couldnt hold a charge if I left the car off for an hr +. Go to a friends house and Im smelling hardcore sulfur, I figure maybe its my diff leaking a little and burning. Well on the way home, the smell comes back hardcore.... the windshield wipers go to max speed, alt belt starts squealing, engine acts normal, speakers pop, I smell burning electrical ****, then I hear a loud BANG POP, car dies. I pop the trunk and see that the battery is smoking and has imploded

Leason learned, don't put a NB alternator in a NA

Yea I did the opposite as you I tried running a NA alternator in a NB and it wouldn't work because the I had 2 voltage regulators working against each other.
