NA with VCT, CAS and NA manifolds - ID help.

Hey,

A friend got an NA with NB engine, the more I look at it the more I do not understand what happened to it.

It is a 95 NA,

Intake manifold: NA 1.8 like
No crank pulley sensor
VCT
CAS (NA like)
NA coils

What engine is it ? NB automatic ? how come the manifolds are interchangeable ?

Thanks !

94-97 intake manifolds will not fit on a 99-05 without modifying the flange. So I am doubtful that was done, as it is a ton of work, and there is no real reason to do it. Could we get pictures of the engine and the bay?

NA coils will fit fine on 99/00 heads, so no issue with those being there. CAS can also be used on the newer heads.

That is a VVT head for sure. I can't tell about the intake manifold from those pictures. Is it 2 piece or 1 piece?

It is 1 piece 94-97 1.8L manifold.

You can fit a CAS into an NB head ?

Yes, you can fit a Cam Angle Sensor onto the NB heads. You just have to pop out the plug in the back. I believe you use the bolt hole that holds the retainer in place to secure the CAS.

CAS fits fine into a NB head.

Its the 1 piece 94-97 intake manifold that completely confuses me. It takes some real work to get one to fit. I believe all the port spacing matches up between the heads, but the holes for the studs are different.

How come no crank sensor ? like ib the NB

Could be only NB head ?

When using an NA cas you don't need a crank sensor. Thats how it was first done.

runs a NA8 manifold on a 99 head.

elior77 03-21-2016 09:38 AM

I know when you run a CAS you don't need it, but it is not there completely.
I believe that if it was a complete NB engine the sensor was there but just not used.

You think it is just a NA8 intake manifold fitted on a NB head ? 99 ? no VCT on 99...

Thanks !

It has VVT so it's an 01-05. No idea what VCT means.

The sensor can be removed. It's just a bolt.

elior77 03-21-2016 09:42 AM

VCT = VVT in mazda language

Thanks

Are you trying to say there is no crank sensor installed? I can't tell from your pictures or not if it is there. If you are running the CAS there is no reason for the crank angle sensor, so it was probably removed.

It does appear to be a normal 94-97 intake manifolds, so nothing fancy that comes from the 99+ intake manifolds.

99.9% VVT head with a modified NA8 intake manifold, nothing too difficult to do.
