The nasty, dirty, awful secret of risk management
I started to look for insurance specific to the Miata today. The problem I ran into is that although I've had nice DD cars in the past, they were stock or at least somewhat close to stock (Upgraded turbo on something that's already turbocharged isn't an issue...) and really weren't difficult to insure properly for their full value.
I've looked through other insurance threads on this, and as the Miata's a DD, Haggerty doesn't apply (I wish I could get Haggerty for a DD, hustler, I wish I could.). What did you guys do for full coverage on your Miata's? And to be even more specific, what did you guys do for full coverage on your Miata's without making the insurance company want to charge you a million bucks a month even with a perfect driving record and being older? The last company I talked to about it wanted more per month than my RX7 costs for six months! Any advice I could get on this would be highly appreciated. I do want to insure the Miata for the full value of the car with full coverage, but I'm not willing to pay more than six months of full coverage on a gorramn RX7 per month for the Miata! Especially not when the RX7 is worth more than the Miata! And no, no matter what, Progressive is not the answer. They can take a long walk off of a short dick. |
Tell Haggerty it's a farm vehicle. Problem solved.
Seriously, if you get side-swiped by a F250 diesel supercab how the hell would they prove pleasure vs. DD? Falsifying insurance information is as American as America. |
What you want is an agreed value policy. I think State Farm still writes them, although I could be wrong.

Collectors insurance with an appraised value and 5000 mile/year limit.

Thank you for the advice though, but the insurance companies that I talked to seem to hate the Miata. |
American Collectors is what I have on my Miata BUT you must provide another registered VIN as a daily driver. You state the value, list the mods, annual mileage and coverage you want.

That's a definite possibility - I may as well insure the RX7 as a DD instead and claim that's the pleasure car at the possible cost differences. Thank you again, m2cupcar! |
