Need some advice.

I am planning to but an 94 Miata in the next few months & I’m looking to modify it as I can afford to.
I wanted to go with a N/A motor & try to get 180 HP out of it but it seems that that route is the most costly.
I have heard a lot of horror stories about turbo charging cars yourself, having read several articles about & they seem very straight forward to put in. I’m wondering what kind of problems that might arise during the installation. Also what kind of HP might I expect from a turbocharged engine? I plan to use the car as a daily driver & on some track days. I’d be happy with 180-200 HP at the rear wheels if at all possible. Thanks in advance! :bigtu:

you can break fittings, ask braineak. but otherwise all good. Fill in your info IE location and car info. I have a 94 as well, they're good platforms, have lower compression, and most have an LSD. Begi-s kit seems to be a hot product lately and should get you to 220whp with an intercooler. I am piecing my own together and im around the same price range.

Not sure if I can afford whole turbo kit right off the bat I know speed costs money so I plan to take my time with this. I want to do it right the first time. I have heard of people trolling junkyards for used turbos. Any
Experience with them? Someone told me when buying a used a used to turbo make sure that the bearings are good.

norwood, you do know that 80% of the people you lashed out on m.net in your thread "how much hp" are here too.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy your stay.

if you want quick spool and a max of 220 or so whp you can go with an sr20 T25. they are available cheap on nissan forums.

if you want 240 or so whp and can sacrifice a little spool saab and volvo T3s are a good option.

Both can usually be had in usable condition for under $150.

Keep your cool here and there's a lot of very valuable information to be had. I'd recommend you start by reading every FAQ you can find, and then do a search for the topics you still have questions on. Nothing you're considering doing to this car hasn't already been tried on this car. Lots of guys using eBay or junkyard turbos. The two popular ones are the T25 and the T3, in a variety of trims and A/Rs.

yes, if money is an object, i'd piece you're own and buy as you can. I will have a Sr20 turbo for sale in a month or so, and i'm only looking to get 90 shipped for it.

UM ok....I guess it's that 20% that knows better. They are the only ones that count.

link to horror stories?

I don't see what's so unreliable about turbo cars. Subaru, Mitsu, Toyota, and mazda seem to know how to do it just fine. Turbo cars seem to win leMans every year. Turbo chargers have no problems getting freight accross America.

I think the horror stories stem from ebay kits, a lack of planning, and ignorance. If you tune the car, build up enough radiator and venting, then they're reliable.

norwood1026 12-02-2007 04:42 AM

I have no links to the stories about turbos that I’ve heard. Factory turbos seem great. Some of my friends have put turbos into their cars & have massive trouble getting them to run right. I recently read an article in Project Car Magazine where they have put a turbo into a GSR & had a lot of trouble with it. So I have my fears I’m sure when done right they are great. That’s why I’m trying to do all the research I can on them.
I don’t think that turbos are unreliable but there have been stories about turbos with too much boost or not enough boost. Like I said from the start I do not know enough about them yet & that’s why I’m here. I'm sure your right about ignorance of turbos I've never had a turbocharged car before drove them yes but never owned one.

Norwood please just do some reading and try to understand what we do here so far you are comeing off pretty silly this is not rocket science here it is just basic thermo and fluid dynamics applied to a internal combustion engine. Jam in more air and fuel and make more power, jam in the air inefeciently and make to much heat detonate and blow holes in your pistons. Jam to much fuel in and make little to no extra power or jam to much air in and make little to no power and possibly burn up valves etc. 95% of the DIY builds on this site are play it safe builds that if enough attention is payed on the install and initial dial in it should last for many miles before you need to fix or upgrade parts. This is the best build for a first time DIY or someone who does not want to fuss with the car a whole hell of a lot hell my setup started as a play it safe build and look at me. On this forum you can benefit from our mistakes and toss around inovative ideas etc. But we are not here to hold your hand and play this out step by step atleast not as a whole if you want something like that then read some more get your post count up and PM someone who seems to have a car like you want or think you want anyway and we would be more than happy to spend one on one time showing you all the nitpicky stuff we went through. But please do not blast us with all of this vagueness. It is like walking into the library of congress and asking for a book sure there are millions of them but wich book do you want etc. I hope this post helps you understand out attitude GL man :D

That's certainly the best example of fuzzy math I've ever seen.
