Need urgent help with Miata

So, I went out for a test drive in the Miata, and all is well.... Except the steering. When I rip it one way, the steering is then weighted towards that side. If I rip it the other, it's weighted towards that side.

When I say weighted, I mean if the wheel is dead center it turns towards the side it was just ripped to.

What could this be? I'm busy double-checking everything right now, but I could use some advice.

Also, my tach just stopped working randomly. I was driving along at about 2,000rpms when it just dropped to 0. I thought I had stalled but I realized the engine was still on.

Any help is appreciated, I need to drive this thing tomorrow.

stop ripping the wheel and start turning it?

I just did a suspension swap so I was making sure it was working properly. I really need some help here, please.

Might be worn steering rack bushings, but since you said you just finished some work, go back and make sure everything is properly torqued. If you changed the ride height, then you need to go get an alignment.

Powersteering?
Did you just swap the shocks? How did you go about the install?

Steiny 02-28-2010 06:36 PM

check your ball joints
same thing happened to mine and all it was was worn out ball joints

Could an alignment issue really cause what I'm describing? I don't mean it just changes like 1cm of the steering wheel, I mean I have to hold the wheel at like a 45 degree angle to get it to go strait, and the fact that it changes when I turn the opposite way makes me wonder if it's just alignment. Could it really be that?

Also, I just went out and checked and I forgot to put the bolt that holds the wheel rotor clamp thing to the lower control arm, the one that's right below the shock mount. I'm going to go put it back in, but could that have been the cause?

Unlikely, given that when I parked it, all was well.

What suspension did you put in? Maybe it's just totally bagged.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys, I found the problem. Due to my own incompetence I forgot a bolt, which was allowing the wheel rotor to sway a little bit. Fixed now.

But I have a new problem. I mentioned in my origional post that the tach wasn't working, but I just drove it a bit and realized it's not just the tach. The dummy oil pressure and temp gauge aren't working either. But, the speedo and the fuel gauges still work, which leads me to believe it's an electrical issue, is there a fuse for these gauges? Perhaps they all share one wire or something?

check METER fuse.

what bolt did you leave out for a suspension swap? there should only be 6 bolts in total you need to touch in the rear.
