New clutch slipping sometimes?
So a few weeks ago I swapped in a FM Level 1 clutch, then 150 miles later, I took it to the drag strip and beat the crap out of it and didn't have any problems. Today I was driving up the street about 60 mph, in 4th gear. I floored it, and I felt the clutch slip a bit. When I installed the clutch I couldn't get it into gear while running, so I had to adjust the rod at the pedal. If I start my car cold and drive it, I actually hear the throwout bearing whine a little, but if I tap the pedal and the TB contacts the pressure plate, the whine goes away. Then I release the pedal and it whines again for about 2 miles. When my clutch slipped, my pedal felt like there was a lot of pressure on it. I'm thinking that a simple bleeding may not cure that, as I used to own a Ducati 916 and it did this exact same thing. No matter how much I bled it, I even put a new master, and slave cylinder on it, but still. When cold, I could drive that bike like a freakin maniac for a hour with no slipping, later in the day...it would slip.
Any suggestions? |

retard fail.
I'd drive a few hundred more miles, if the problem persists you can try taking the clutch out and scuffing it with a cookie disc but that's grasping at straws. |

that would be my 1st conclusion... did you clean your flywheel of any grease or oil when you installed it (i know when i work on a car anything and everything i touch gets dirty). that can also be a reason a new clutch install would slip as well. |
I took a scuff pad to both surfaces. When I raced with that clutch after less than 150 miles, it grabbed hard. Now occasionally it slips. WTF? Like I said the clutch seems to disengage a lot easier if I drive it for a while. If it sits in the garage, then I take it out, it seems to disengage father away.

I installed a braided clutch line today and a new slave cylinder. Bled it correctly, it feels like a world of difference, but after driving awhile, the pedal got a bit firmer. Maybe it's the master cylinder?

make sure you adjusted the rod correctly.

I would recommend that clutch to anybody. It's inexpensive and it works well. My rod is adjusted correctly, I just think it's gettin air from somewhere. Only thing I didn't change was the master cylinder, so I'll bleed it again tomorrow morning and see how it works out.

Not necessary...I have a Haynes maunal and I also downloaded the '99-'00 sticky that you posted with "please right click, then click save target as". Thanks.
Like I said before though, when I start the car cold, the pedal needs to be pushed all the way to the floor for me to be able to put in in gear while running. After I drive it a while, I can actually push the clutch in about 1/2 way at a stop sign to put in it gear. Cold- pedal feels like it doesn't contact the pressure plate till 1/2 pedal. Hot (after driving for about 20 minutes)- pedal feels very firm, and the slightest touch of the pedal is all it takes to feel the pressure plate. |
