Buying an FM Stage 1 clutch to go with the new turbo setup. Do I get the happy meal or no? Trusted friends with boosted Miatas tell me it's not worth it. I've driven NA cars with really light flywheels and hated it. My buddy's 195whp 92 has a lightened stocker and I can't really tell. If it's of questionable benefit, I have better uses for the cash.

Lightweight fly'll make your launches worse; the flywheel carries inertia which is transferred to the wheels. Lighter fly = less inertia; there was a guy who lost a couple tenths of a second on a 1/4 after putting in a lightweight flywheel.

It'll also be rev-happy. I think the stock Miata is too rev-happy, I sometimes find myself accidently revving up to 3.5 or 4k rpms on a regular launch because it just goes to quickly; a lighter flywheel'll just exacerbate that and make it worse.

It just comes down to feel.

90% or more, street car. I was leaning towards the 13# or whatever the heavier one is. I imagine the 5# or so difference wouldn't be very detrimental to drivability. The flip side to the "moderate" approach though, is that I imagine any benefit may not really be worth $250. I'm guessing that money might be better spent on a slim Koyo radiator....which is what I'd do with it.

i dont have the fm one, but i noticed a nice difference when i went from stock to the 12lb xtd. i didnt feel like i lost any power, just some streetability. i went from 15psi on stock clutch and flywheel, to 18psi on the xtd, and the only thing i even notice is taking off from a stop, my clutch makes a wierd chirp if you go too easy on it. other than that, ill probably run this on the fidanza 4.3 clutch kit when i put it in, if the flywheels not too ripped up looking...lol... but that fm one was my first choice i just needed a cheap clutch at the time so i got that kit cheap instead...

i'm a fan of mine. It can be more frustrating in city traffic but i got use to it. try not to go to light mine is 11.5lbs and i wouldn't want anything lighter than that.

i'm all street. FM swayed me towards the heavier of their two lightweight flywheel options, and i haven't looked back since.

i have the 10lb and my car is just as easy to drive as stock... I voted "no" because i feel like there wasnt enough difference to justify the cost

So, Fooger....If you had to decide between the FW and a radiator upgrade......?
Also, since you have the very one I'm considering, how much difference did you notice between it and the stocker?

I think we may have talked via email about this but..

I have the 10.3lb one.. whichever is the really light one, and I could notice a difference when driving a friends miata and mine back to back. I felt shifting was where I noticed the largest improvements. Never had any issues what so ever. Could money be spent elsewhere? Sure. I guess if it was FW vs Radiator I'd probably go radiator.

the difference in flywheel weight wasnt an 'OMG THATS CRAZY' difference, but when i swapped flywheels, i did a couple other mods at the same time (FM2 Hydra kit, clutch, exhaust, radiator, NB Head Swap, 6ULs, etc.) so noticing a difference that i can attribute to a single item wasn't possible

i was at the last BMC Cross in my black 99 n/a (CSP 114). I'm still chipping away at an oil leak in the turbo car. I've got to get busy on fixing the oil pan seal. I should go start that now....I'm so sick of pulling the motor though :(

I'll be out training during the next BMC AutoX (military), but plan to make events after 25 July - hopefully in the turbo

I have a 12lb (I think) ACT street flywheel, there is a race flywheel, which I believe is around 10lbs. Stay far away from the aluminum ones... Personally I love it and wish I had went for the lighter one. The car revs very fast and is also much more responsive, but I also have a ligher crankshaft which was done at the same time.

Got the M-Tuned reroute already (thanks Webby!). Flywheel SEEMS unnecessary but I'm going to have it all apart so I feel like I should suck it up and do it instead of regretting it. I just don't want to regret installing it. I'm just already starting to go over budget with this thing and have yet to turn a wrench! I want to make prudent purchases at this point.

I'm hoping my car will be ready for August autocross, we'll see. I'm the 95M with a black interior. If you see it, come say hello.

Radiator > lightened flywheel. The miata has a light enough flywheel anyways IMO. I have driven one with a FM flywheel, and there were good and bads about it. I don't see spending the money for it.

I had a lightweight flywheel on my 1.6 setup and enjoyed it. When I went to my 1.8 conversion I didn't bother though. Just picked up a stock one, and I can't say I've missed it at all.
